Spez power saddle

Why do people use the Power saddle? It was designed for triathlon and more specifically to allow the Time Trialists to  move their position more forward on the bike while keeping the nose of the saddle at the 5cm minimum distance behind the BB centreline. I see so many people using the saddle with a conventional KOPS seating position and then sitting on the less supportive nose area of the saddle. Surely longer saddles will work better especially those with more padding in the nose?

Are you saying it shouldn't be used in applications other than triathlons?

If KOPS can be achieved with the power saddle, what's the problem really?

Some reviewers of the power saddle have indicated that the shorter nose does limit more forward 'comfortable' climbing positions, but it's not a show stopper and more a minor observation.

Hi all, so am thinking of getting one of these power saddles, on long rides i get some numbness in my right foot, thinking it may be as a result of some blood flow restriction caused by my current saddle.

These saddles have been out for a while and was just interested to know if the peeps that have used them rate them.

The design is apparently to allow blood flow and stop compression of nerves etc.

What you say hubbers ?

Been through this myself. Ended calling Ms Welsh from Lake shoes. 2.5k later. Comfy all day ride clipless shoes. In my size and specific width with broad support structure. (although I still prefer flats for other reasons).

I'm saying the saddle is design to work with a very aero , weight forward oriented position on the bike. It also limits the riders movement on the saddle hence its not going to be an ideal fit for the majority of people.

If you find it compfortable then I'm happy for you but I found it to be very restrictive and too wide except when fitted to my road bike for a TT position set up where I don't move about on the saddle.

Could be your saddle, could be an imbalance in your leg muscles (left and right).

It could also be caused by your shoes or position of feet on the pedals. Maybe you want to see a physio or biokinetisist before springing for a new saddle that may treat the symptom for a short while

As mentioned by a lot of the folks already, the Power has a slightly shorter nose and a fatter base even though they are still the same width i.e. 143 - 155mm. The "lovers groove" on the Power is almost throughout the whole saddle. This stocky / fat built of the saddle hurt my butt on the long rides and also gave me some chaffing. I enjoy the "longer" "sleeker" feel of the phenom, it allows you to slide into position rather than just sit down  :D. (If that makes any sense)

Why does the phenom work better for you? Is it round?

I ask because when i initially iftted the test Power, that ski jump at the back was causing me to slide forward (bad initial setup on my behalf). The phenom 'looks' like it has a shallower slope at the back, but i'm basing that off photos of the saddles. I also initially thought the power was a bit too flat, and again based off photos, the phenom looked rounder.

you and that phenom seem to have a somewhat mechaphiliac relationship ;)

I hear you. The Phenom has a much more gradual flair from the nose to the sit bone area and its also more curved across the top. This shape tends to suit a lot more people coupled to a nice flexible base and bingo you have comfy saddle.

The Power..... 1 position and that's it. Very few people sit in one position except triathletes hence I'm surprised to see so many recommendations  for it. I have the Ryder version with a cheap seatpost for TT's. Its got more padding in the nose so a bit more comfy when down low in TT position.

Definitely  :w00t:.  I've had quite a few saddles before getting my first phenom, I actually think that I've owned around 10 phenoms over the last few years. I have also tried the Romin before (road saddle) - very hard but very comfy as well

And I don't see anyone mention that the Phenom is cheaper than the Power  :whistling:

Slightly off topic, but after about 20 hours of your tjommie forcing its will on a Brooks B17 you will never look back.

But what do I know.....I've been riding with a saddle bag as well for over a quarter of a century, taking no cognisance of form over function or the self-appointed fashion police
