So.... feedback from Vitality.

......

How long will it take Discovery to get with the program?

To some extent this is NOT Discovery / Vitality.  And I am NOT a Vitality fan .... for various other reasons, but in this case they at least seem consistent, sadly so.

STRAVA wants a golden handshake before Wahoo or IndiVelo can auto upload their rides to Strava.  Thus the hack to load the fit files across ....

Now the bit I dont understand yet - How do you record an indoor ride on a Garmin device .... easy enough to link the heart rate and cadence monitors .... but where do you get the speed from ?

Most modern trainers have speed calculated from the accelerometer measuring rotational speed at/near the cassette.

I do believe my Kickr Core works on this principle.  Dont know how/if my Garmin can tap into that information like it can on typical sensors.  Which effectively means that I can only record time, cadence and heart rate on my Garmin during an indoor ride - more accurately, I dont know how to record more directly onto the Garmin.

The physical file dump of the fit file seems the only way to get all the data back to Garmin Connect.  Which is okay for a non-Vitality user.  Do wonder though if this works for Vitality users.

If using the indoor trainer, create an activity profile (BIKE INDOOR) then it doesn't search for GPS and result in auto-pausing problems.

As Johnny82 above says, just pair your trainer to the Garmin and you're good to go. You can even dual record on another app at the same time.

Have a look at this, very good, user friendly watch at a good price.

Garmin Vivoactive 4 | Watches & Wearables | Bike Hub

I have been using the Vivoactive 4 for about 4 years now.

Commuting it is used to record cycling.

Walking and park runs are recorded.

Same with a range of gym sessions.

Hardly ever use a bank card any more, Garmin tap to pay works very good.

On the odd occasion I might use it to check the time.

Only down side .... when recording 2 to 3 hour sessions per day the battery needs charging roughly twice a week.

I am keeping an eye out for a Venue 3 on Black Friday deals.  The more videos I watch, the more I realise just how good a deal the Vivoactive 4 was.  The current Vivoactive 5 is a ceriously nice piece of kit.

Latest pulse sensor on the Vivoactive 5 vs the extra functions on the Venue 3, but wait, the Vivoactive 5 has some nifty new smart watch functions .... they know how to make it a near impossible decision ...

And then I realise again how good an entry level unit the Vivoactive 4 is.

Interesting question

I use my 830 on all IDT sessions on IV/TPV for Disco points mainly - On all the seesions recorded in Connect it has my speed & power stats not sure if its getting it off the app or the trainer - I would imagine its from the smart trainer

The FIT file will tell you.
Having said that, I notice HR doesn't show Polar.
