Any news about the guy that overcooked one of the corners on the first downhill and ended up quite far down the side of the road?

Lovely stuff - another excellent read!

Langwater had an Underwater Monster near it's end this year!  Confidently claiming it's the lowest ever, piece of cake, 20 seconds later I was swimming...

Thanks TIB.

Yup - it looked like a doddle this year, and next thing my partner is swimming. Looking at the pictures, I see that he wasn't alone in taking a mid-ride swim!

Hehe, we were the slightly less competitive toilet-humor chaps. Although it looked like a gala, understandably the rest of my team flatly refused to admit to more than "just a footdown"

Was that you in the start chute? My partner only told me about his comment after the ride. Sorry for being those guys who push through the masses, but we really wanted to start closer to the front. Not that it helped much...

All good jest. Just warming up for 13 odd hours of chirping.

Besides, you did not fit in where we were standing, way too skinny.... :)  :)

Little did we know about the toilet juice around the corner! Didn't fit in there either. Should have stuck where we were.;)

We were on the left and with about 15 meters to go my partner hit a rock that stopped him dead. He has quite a bit of momentum with his 125kg, 2m frame! I also went foot down right behind him and a team of 4 ladies were coming and as I quickly moved she fell “half lyf” in as I could stop her fall somewhat. Her partner 10m behind us also went down but FULLY submerged. They were all laughing and screaming at each other to take photos. They made my extreme suffering somewhat better!

Number 4 for me this year was a tough one. We started well and the first 100kms flew by.

After having one and a half roosterkoeke and some droee wors up to then I started to struggle to eat from checkpoint 3 onwards. My stomach wasn't feeling great and I just couldn't get much down. Forced myself to have some wors and pushed on.

My 34-11/42 combination was a mistake and I had a terrible time on MAC. Made it to the top in daylight, changed and dropped down as it started to get dark. From there I just battled to eat and drink. The only thing I could get down was water. Changed to coke & water mix at Bergplaas as I thought it was the taste of the Cadence that made not feel lekker, but even that didn't go down well. Filled my bottle with coke & water at Bergplaas and it was still half by the end.

I also struggled to stay awake on Neverender but just told myself to keep going. No stopping. Passed a guy sleeping next to the side of the road and seriously considered having a 5 minute nap but pushed on. Made it to the top though and had a coffee at CP7, which helped. I was short of breath, struggled to eat but the legs still felt in semi-decent shape.

We wanted to go under 13 hours but ended up coming in just over 13 and a half hours. Decent time after a rough day.

I actually had an awesome ride...  All 15h21 minutes of it. I never understand these guys that say they crawled home or limped in, in 13 hrs

Granted we had some mechanical's in our group. 1 member had a side wall slash of note just before CP2. Duct tape, gators the works to try and get this thing fixed. Eventually got a new tire at CP3. Had to fix that puncture 3 times.

Then just after that 5 km later before Fang 1 another member had a double blow out on one of the descents. The sealant stuck the tires to the rim. spent at least 30 min fixing those flats.

My whole mission was to try and get up MAC in the day. Luckily we decided to put a spare light in the box at CP3. With our luck we needed it. Sunset at the base of MAC. But oh well, there's always next year I suppose.

Nutrition wise  I guess it's what works for you. I love chocolate milk, but last year when I had it it didn't go down too well. For me salted potatoes and game was my fuel of choice. Along with a few far bars and a few pieces of droewors. 1 Sosatie and that magic soup at Berg plaas. And a chip roll And a jaffle. But that's it :D

As always, a beautifully penned report Velouria. You should write more!

Thanks DJR - do you know how hard it is to write these? The only reason I do stupid long rides is in the hope that my partner or I will do something noteworthy enough to write about. Half the ride I'm trying to find the angle for the blog, waiting for THE thing. My partner usually obliges, eventually. Occasionally, I have to step up and take one for the team when things are looking dire ;)
