early days of gravel bikes?

are there any gravel grinders entered this year?

Yoh - it's going to take a brave soul to enter Baviaans on a gravel bike. There are several areas where a gravel bike is going to fly, and several areas where I'd want to chuck that bike into the bushes!!

That was the year I missed DC with a knee injury (dating back to the Epic). Baviaans just made it worse...

My wife did backup for the team though while I moped at home!

I thiiiink it was 2008... fandacious was also in the team. I just remember the team started at an absolutely ridiculous pace. The first rider dropped off the squad on the first climb out of town within the first 2km. I was quietly glad my frontwheel started breaking spokes (3) giving me a valid excuse to drop off the train.

Good times.

Edit :

2008 it was. Red/White/Black helmet.

Keen to try TB again next year.

But a question for a friend (really). He got a "wildcard" entry to the Ironman world champs in 3 weeks and is worried he will hurt himself on the TB and result in him finishing stone last for the Ironman. I don't think he is the fastest chap in triathlons so he is understandably worried.

Question : Will TB be a good training ride, or will the recovery time needed hurt his energy stores and legs and result in a slower time for Ironman? IMHO he needs the training ride and the recovery for 5 or 6 days can be taken up by swimming and running short distances.

I would have ridden. 3 weeks is plenty time to recover. But I'm known for skimping on rest. In 2010 I did full distance IM, and then the weekend later a 76km trail run. Or the other way around, can't remember, but it was back to back weekends. And I didn't die or have bad legs.

Aaah yes - "the one black shoe cover, one white shoe cover year". I think it was Chris (CVanV on the Hub) - third from the right - that got dropped early that year!

Fandacious is not a name one sees often anymore.

He is too busy playing bodyguard for his Mrs!

Looks like rain on the weekend

Looks like rain on Friday but a dry sunny day on Saturday. Could bode well for road surfaces.
