The "Post Tour de France" Challenge 2018

Another "Tour de France" is over and as the dust settles, I got to thinking about some of the race statistics and the final results of this latest Grand Tour.

I know these guys are Pros and they do this for a living but, even so, some of the numbers involved are pretty amazing to a keen (though limited!) amateur like myself :-)

Purely out of curiosity, I've decided to set myself a challenge.

It took Geraint Thomas 83H 17' 13" to complete the 3349km that made up the 2018 edition of the race. My challenge is to see how far I can ride & how high I can climb, in the same amount of time.

I've only set myself a few rules:

1) The "Time Allowed" for the challenge is set at G's overall time for the race - 83H 17' 13"

2) For convenience, I'll be doing it all on my MTB (while I ride and research my local routes in Zona Zero, Ainsa)

3) My total time must comprise of 83 hrs of consecutive rides. No picking out the fastest three rides every week for the next 6 months and adding them together! Every ride I do from when I start has to count. If I have a bad day and it brings my average down, well then it'll be the same as it is for the Pros when they have a bad day ;-)

4) The only exception to rule 3 - I'm allowed to "not count" any two rides of my choice between when I start and when I finish. They will be my equivalent of Rest Days. But . . . Once I've "written off" a particular ride (ie used up a rest day) I can't then reinstate it and write off a "worse ride" instead" :-)

5) No cheating. What would be the point?

Wish me luck - I start on Tuesday (because this weekend is our village Fiesta and we're partying & eating like it was an Olympic sport at the moment!)

Bonus.

Good idea. Love it and if I lived where you do I'd be killing it. I might take a different angle and see how long it will take to ride G's distance! Elevation isn't that good in CT but we're all over it compared to the oke's in the 'spruit.

I'm guessing for me some where around next years vuelta might be a safe bet. I'm thinking average ride is 20kms a week. That means about 170 odd rides. Currently trying to step it up to 1 x 20km ride and 2 x 10km ride (but super gnar, honest) a week. Even with that it could be a while!

Sorry but I don't understand

170 rides of 20 km per week

That's 3,5 years

Some decent ascent.

Wish I had the time to ride every day for 2 or 3 weeks. Enjoy

Being in the Pyrenees mountains means there's very little around here that is flat. Every ride has some climbing included :-)

I don't get out every day, but I do get out probably 5 times a week - which is enough really - I haven't the energy for more!

  • 2 weeks later...
