Difference between the rear shocks (Buying a new bike) HELP PLZ

I disagree with the outdated comment. Just because it's unfashionable doesn't make it outdated.

Everything chapeau. Best advice given thus far. Silverback or Giant or even a blow out deal on a Momsen ViPa (or is that outdated too.... LOL)

Trek also having end of season sales. FuelEX 9.8going for R60k.

Fashionable geometry or not that Scott is pig heavy for the purpose the OP wants to use. At 14Kg he may as well look for a real trail bike not an Xc bike with an identity crisis

I don't know if it has been mentioned before, but why not try and shop around a bit for a 2018 model as the 2019 models will probably start to roll out soon. You might get a good deal on a bike with better specs on a 2018 model as you would on a 2019 one. 

 

Also, my money is on the Scott, the better geometry will instil more confidence when the front wheel is pointed down the mountain.

August/September is the time of the year when the next year's models get released and current models go on clearance sale.

You'd be better off shopping around for a deal on a 2018 Spark now, and in the process get one with better specs.

I see the 2018 Scott Spark 940 is like 3k more than the 2019 Spark 960.

 

Is it a better bike? Cant understand why they say the 2019 960 specs is crap. 

 

30k for the bike is actually my max as I need to buy all the other stuff too (Pedals/helmet ect ect)

2018 940 Is much better specced than the 2019 960.

It's got the Fox 34 FLOAT Performance

Fox nude twinloc rear

Sram GX Eagle 1x12

 

Essentially similar to the Merida part spec wise

It's FAR better. 

 

Superior fork (as in, miles ahead) 

Better wheels

better gruppo

same better-than-merida frame. 

Better shock

 

Etc etc.

Always look at the suspension first when it comes to component specs. Drive trains shouldn't be your deciding factor as a large part of it is wear and tear items that can/will in any case be replaced afterwards. However your suspension have the biggest impact on ride quality, and upgrading that later on is usually very expensive exercise.

Well yes and no re considering parts spec.

 

Any bike specced with XT 8000 and SLX will be obsolete by the 2020 model year as Shimano is launching XT 8x00 sometime in quarter 2 of 2019.

That will require a micro spline compatible rear hub if the buyer chooses to stick with Shimano.

SRAM GX Eagle has an XD driver which is upward compatible so the future upgrade cost will be lower.

Generally I would consider drive train components to be replaceable but for the next two model years I personally would consider the parts to be something that influences my purchase decision because it will determine my upgrade path.

Personally I won't touch a new bike with current Shimano equipment. Once shimano has rolled out micro drive across its range then I would only consider rolling chassis quality

Am I not to heavy for the Spark 940 ? (107kg).

 

According to the Scott website the system weight is 128kg including the rider  :blink:  Why spend 35k on a bike when I can potentially break it if I drop lets say 30cm of a rock? Or am I missing something here?

See it as motivation to get fit and lose weight.

That's a good one. 

 

You know what you need to do to get your bike micro-spline compatible? Change the freehub body. That's it. Same for XD driver. Not that I'd get an XD driver, as SRAM's cassettes are far more expensive than other, 3rd party options, which work on current shimano freehubs. 

 

Not to mention that there will still be numerous after-market cassette options that allow use of the "obsolete" current non-microdrive standard.

I am fit ( Crossfit fit lol ), but yeah Im definitely hoping the Bike will help me drop below 95kg.

Which hubs are compatible with micro drive?

Only DT Swiss 240S at this point. Any other hub and you need to buy a DT Swiss or Shimano hub. Maybe Shimano will license the freehub to others in time but that isn't the case for this or the next model year.

 

Other cassette options? Sunrace isn't anywhere close to the quality of SRAM 12speed offerings.

Shimano xt is currently 11speed.

Xt8x00 will be like XTR, 12 speed. The 11s system doesn't have the range so pull another one from the hat
