Well yes and no re considering parts spec.

Any bike specced with XT 8000 and SLX will be obsolete by the 2020 model year as Shimano is launching XT 8x00 sometime in quarter 2 of 2019.

That will require a micro spline compatible rear hub if the buyer chooses to stick with Shimano.

SRAM GX Eagle has an XD driver which is upward compatible so the future upgrade cost will be lower.

Generally I would consider drive train components to be replaceable but for the next two model years I personally would consider the parts to be something that influences my purchase decision because it will determine my upgrade path.

Personally I won't touch a new bike with current Shimano equipment. Once shimano has rolled out micro drive across its range then I would only consider rolling chassis quality

Oh I like this game. It's called the baiting game. You know the one where someone doesn't have anything meaningful to contribute to the discussion and then tries to mind read hoping that the other party escalates the discussion and yada yada yada...

Sorry man I don't feel like playing tonight. I'm busy keeping my 1994 steel hardtail mtb with obsolete geometry and xtr components on the trail

You know winter bike and all that.

FAIR GAME

I DEFINITELY was trying to bait you , but what was the whole story with the M8000 and M7000 series being obsolete  then ?

OP I apologize for what this thread has turned into

STRICTLY out of the two bikes you mentioned I ( if I was buying with my own money ) would go with the Merida , its definitely not the best bikes considering the "class" it's in but out of those its the better bike

That does not mean the bike will suit what you want to accomplish on the trails , ehich I gather to be have A bike that will pedal good but not hold you back on the downs ( merida one-twenty ( the one they JUST launched ) and scott 940 come to mind )

MY reccomendations

Newest Merida 120  https://www.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bikes/full-suspension/trail/2018/one-twenty-600-9098.html   ..... go with the 29er

Can you imagine how they would be doing on 67 degree bikes.

outdated NOT obsolete

same way A 2.5L engine in A hatch is NOT obsolete but IS outdated ( it works but ain't the best solution there is available right now ..... to dumb it down )

That's the one unfortunate but unavoidable truth about this sport - it is FLIPEN expensive. Try to explain it to anyone that does not ride and you are met with a blank stare or "it better come with a motor for that price". I think we just get desensitised to it.
