A question...if you riding a bike and have an accident and hit your head be it a road bike or MTB  to a point that the helmet breaks...if you indicate that you have blurred vision and feel dizzy...do you think the hospital ER doctor should book you in for observation or just check you out and send you home?

I think they should check you in, but with me they didn't, and were only concerned with the broken bone.  I had about five hours of total memory loss, got lost getting home down a road which I've ridden hundreds of times (had to be directed by a hiker who phoned the next day), kept repeating the same questions and statements during that time, and got so dizzy I had to lie on the floor immediately (which is the same time my wife decided I needed to go to the hospital).  So a major concussion, and it wasn't my first either.  But the doctors weren't concerned about it at all.  It took about two weeks for me to feel 'normal' again.  I was very slow and delayed, and I knew it, but couldn't speed up my brain.  it was an awful feeling.

After everything I've learnt since then about concussions, I'm still very surprised that nothing was done to look into the issue at the time.

firstly i need to share something i wish i had read or heard about before saturday...chain suck/slip/jump whatever you want to call it...i have done a google search to try understand what actually happened and why i went over the bars and not just whacked my nuts on the crossbar....if your chain is stretched...dont stand and pedal ...especially on a MTB...you might get lucky and just slip or end up hugging the ground.

so i am going down a hill through the dip and there is a slight rinse then over the top and down the other side...now that i have the strength in my legs i dont even change to an easier gear...i leave the chain on the front big ring and small cassette gear ...stand up and pedal over the rise...well that is what i thought was going to happen...instead i heard a clack sound ...before i could say bah bah black sheep...there was a loud thud (sounded like an elephant had fallen over) and i was lying face down on the tar in a lot of pain...however because we are not soccer players ...not even a second later i was up...looking around to make sure nobody saw what had just happened...i realised i couldnt breathe...sat next to the road and got over it ...checked the bike there  were some minor scratches on the handlebars ...so off we went again...unfortunately the blood was pouring out my elbow...it looked like a stick or something had poked a hole...so we decided to end the ride and go try stop the bleeding.

rode home and cleaned up all the roasties...DV was having great fun spraying some burny stuff on the roaties ...while I danced around like a crazy person....woke up at 3 am on sunday the bleeding in the elbow had still not stopped and my hand was swollen...i made the call to visit the Westville ER.

They did all the checks...blood pressure sugar etc and wait for it ...sent me for xrays...it turns out that my elbow has a few bits and pieces floating around under the skin from an accident i had a long time ago...now there are a few new pieces from this tar hug...ribs and collar bone all good...then we got to the neck...it seems that lump that i can feel in my neck is C6 which has a piece broken off ... you can see it floating around on the xray...there are also a few other issues which require attention ...like the gap between C6 and 7 and the fact that C1-7 are abnormally straight which he indicated could be caused from tight muscles in the neck which could explain why i battle to turn my head to the right ...i gave the doc a quick run down on my previous incidents and told him about the blurred vision and dizzyness...he gave me a script for some pills ...a neck brace... said i should go see a specialist and sent me home.

what do i take from this incident.

when checking the chain with a chain gauge if it drops into 0.5 ...you still ok ...but it would be a good idea to look into replacing the chain...if the chain gauge drops into 0.75 ...it is an indication that the chain is pretty stretched and should be replaced ASAP...it is not advisable to stand and pedal if the chain gets to this stage...rather stay seated ...at least then if the chain does jump off ...or hook on the front ring you not going to eat dirt...mechanicals happen...new chains snap...there is nothing you can do about it...but if you know your chain is stretched be aware of the consequences.

to add ...i had been trying to sort out a leak in my back tyre (not seating tight on the rim)...so i had released the clutch on the XT derailleur so the chain had a lot of "slack"...something else you need to be aware of...a loose fitting tubeless tyre...it also has it dangers...but i am not going to go into that....just be aware of it and make sure you have enough sealant in the tryre.

tomorrow is the big day...i finally get to see a specialist about a piece of bone (from C6) floating around in neck ...what is causing my neck to be abnormally straight and why there is such a big gap between C6 / 7 and at the same time hopefully we are going to find out if the dizzyness and blurred vision is all clear...it is gona break me financially but it has to be done...once it is sorted out i can start over.

I decided to ease off the pain killers today...now i can feel all the aches and pains...didnt even know i had bruising on my legs...today i can feel it.

The human body is an amazing piece of work...a piece of bone or something was floating around in elbow ...away from the hole...last night after my 30 minute epsom salt soak the hole was cleaned out and it looks like the piece is being rejected from my body...i am hoping that it pops out tonight...i need to dry out the wound from tomorrow.

And again...

Dr could do nothing. Had to heal by it's own. This was 4 weeks ago.

Not to mention the broken ribs on same side.

Getting out of bed was extremely difficult so I got myself a lazy chair

to sleep in for the first week.

Then I almost got pneumonia due to not being able to cough.

i finally got to go see a man who has a good idea about bones ...especially the ones in your back and neck...the check up including a very basic ...look to the left look to the right look up at the ceiling and put your chin on your chest ..sent me down for 2 more xrays went through them with me...explained what was going on in my neck and gave me the all clear... i dont need the neck brace anymore and at this point dont require an MRI scan...he explained what is going on with my neck (C6) and indicated that it is not a major issue.

he gave me a few tips to watch out for while riding...one of them was to watch out when i get fatigued...i need to be aware of "clipping" things with the bar ends it could be an indication of another issue...it could also be related to what happens with my hand ...however it is not a major issue ...but i need to make a mental note and be aware if it continues happen...and if it does... to revisit...it has nothing to do with old age ;)

I just need to slow down a bit and try enjoy the experience on the bike.

what a relief...just need to wait for the arms to clear up and we good to go again...thanks goodness for pain killers :)

Since everybody brags about their Titanium upgrades......this is my latest  :(  All inclusive, it comes to about R100 000, mostly courtesy of Discovery, without which I would have been a one winged bird in a very deep hole. :)

Someone comments the other day about me being scared to get back on my bike...

chatting to my accountant ...2 years in hospital from a back injury ...over the bars...his company took a beating of note...it has taken years to recover.

Working with an engineer on site...over the bars...broke his back,,,had to be airlifted from accident.

group ride...2 killed 1.5 seconds behind me.

group ride...a monkey runs across the road...one person over the bars ... ICU with a few broken bones...still not riding.

group ride...front rider clips the pavement ...goes down slides across my path.

group ride...young girl off the road hits a cliff face and rolls a few times.

group ride...i hear that sound behind me as the rider goes down ...i see a vehicle coming at us...cyclist stops less than a metre from the bumper on the wrong side of the road.

and many more........

today i can finally rest my arm on my desk...i thank my guardian angels that most of the impact was on my left arm ...helmet...knees and shoes ...and not my damaged right arm again...i already have restricted movement due to pieces missing from the elbow...and a hand full of pins holding my hand together.

no i wouldnt say scared but i would say a little nervous to ride...i did put my kit out last weekend ...and got up half an hour before my alarm.

being self employed and hands on doesnt make it easy after an accident...i cant lay in bed for 3 weeks off sick...while recovering ...being self employed means...strapping the wounds...popping pain killers and getting on with it.

i must say... it seems getting old you also become a bit of a wussy ...peeling off those gauze  strips in the evening everyday after soaking them had me biting on a piece of leather.
