"Congratulation" !! ??  dis 'n fo..... duur gat jeuk.

'n Bietjie salf sou baie gehelp het en baie goedkoper.

Ek dink Myles wou so 'n bietjie help met die room.

Maar nou ja 'n jeuk is 'n jeuk en 'n man moet krap.

But pleeeaasse in a months time come back to this thread and give us your honest opinion of your experience and findings. (no seriously)

Enjoy the bike - and many happy miles.

Thankfully selling the EX5 will help with the budget ....

Make no mistake - I READ and re-read Miles's post !  Ultimately it came down to "the fit" - having gone for the bike fit I now understand why I was getting certain aches and pains ....

Only a couple of good rides will tell if the frame size truly solve these issues .....

And yes, I will provide feedback.

LESSONS LEARNT thus far - getting back on a bike after some 25 years off the saddle, what "felt" good was rather "comfortable" than good .... As I slowly loosened up and rehabilitated my knees, and slowly started pushing harder the mis-fit became apparent.

So if I may pass on some information for the next middle aged guy getting back into the saddle -   Get proper advise and make sure you get the correct SIZE bike.  As you grow back into it the saddle height and handle bars can be moved about ......

Done 60km on my new Spark 940 this weekend. What a rad bike! Easy to pedal on the flat stuff, climbs well without the front end wandering and defends with proper poise and confidence. The Twinloc seems like a gimmick, but it works as advertised. Traction control mode helps getting up the hills, lock out is for the tar and decend mode allows it to get rowdy but stay in control. A great all rounder IMO! As others have said, the stock saddle must go! Popped a Fizik Tundra on mine to solve that problem

would be interested to know the real feel benefits of a carbon vs light alu, how much does the stiffness and lets say 1kg extra carry for a rider not racing for podium

Lose 1kg off your body and see the difference to your riding.

I am in the market for a dual suspension bike.

I am NOT married to any brand .....

I currently have the Fuel EX 5.  Best part of this bike is the geometry ... I LOVE that long nose and dosile feel of the bike.

I have test ridden some other bikes and am not in the market for anything with a steep front fork, nor "twitchy" steering.

"likes" .... gotten used to the SRAM Eagle GX.

Happy with an alu frame ..... (translation, the carban frames with decent spec equipment is out of my price range)

At the Backsberg ride I wished I had remote lock-out shocks ...

The Scott Spark 940 ticks these boxes.  And with the 2019 stock about to hit the shelves the 2018 model is going at a good price... R37k

QUESTION - what other dual suspension bikes should I also look at ?

I would like to be believe that I am (sometimes) open-minded and can listen to good input from others .... that said, as much as I may agree on the superiority of some bikes .... I am on a budget

been riding the 940 now for almost a year. and what a bike. i might be scott biased but the slack head angle makes all the diff. the bike is slightly heavier due to the dropper and fox 34 up front. but i removed the dropper and only fit it when i go play. and man can this bike play. handles jumps, roosts, everything! and then you can also do long distance. i just did the trans baviaans with now issues. this is a do it all bike, go for it.

That is my thinking, rather go for a Alu frame with better components and from a weight perspective drop your body weight rather.

Was curious if there were any other benefits, if the 910 vs 940 is basically a difference of 5 - 10 min difference over a race for me it won't really justify it.  But if you having more fun and feel safer.. then it is probably worth it

The 920 comes with fox34 performance elite fork and the nude damper. So it’s for better suspension units as well. Rest of the parts are kind similar so basically you buy a better platform for upgrades.

The carbon frame is stiffer in torsion at the B.B. as well as at the head tube. You can load it more and it’ll handle better as a result. The lighter weight is 1 kg out of the ride bike combo so that’s a gain in W/kg right there.

Is it worth the extra R10k? Well that depends. I don’t care so much about the stiffness gains but the weight loss is an advantage on every climb and more so as you fatigue

.. and with that re-direct to the which shoes thread

Which Scott shoes did you get? Might be looking for a new pair, as I have the ratchet system, but due to an unfortunate miss step (and with my racetec chip getting in the way), one of the Velcro straps got damaged.

thanks, think one day when they have one of those bike days I should go compare the two, but then I might just develop an itch

It is a set of "Scott Stickj" shoes.

I ride flats and have an old pair of tekkies that just fits perfectly ... dirty as anything after various muddy rides, cant wash all the brown out of it any more, but still my favorite ....   :w00t:   :whistling:

I need to take the Scotts for a proper ride ....
