Shimano 105 R7000 vs Ultegra R8000

Is there a significant difference between the new 105 R7000 and Ultegra R8000 apart from weight? i.e. wear and tear? Shifting? etc.

Looking between the new 2019 Giant Propel Advanced Disc 1 or 2 as reasonable options and value - Mainly for training purposes outdoors and on a trainer, but must also be able to race hard. The only difference is the one bike has carbon wheels and R8000 Ultegra, and the other has normal wheels and the new R7000 105 groupset. Ignoring the difference in wheels, would you say the new 105 R7000 will do just as well?

I installed the 105 on my wife's bike and the Ultegra on my bike. I was surprised with the shifting of the 105. Think weight will be the deciding factor and price. The 105 cassette is really heavy.

Weight saving?

Also on an Ultegra 6800 groupset.

Only reason I'm shopping is because I'm considering switching to discs. The reason I would not touch 105 before was purely aesthetics....it was UGLY! The R7000 looks much better.

I have the 5700 10 speed. Always thought the 6700 felt lighter and crisper to the touch.

Then when it came time for new cables etc. I put Dura Ace cables and casings, both for the brakes and gears. As well as an Ultegra casette

Now I am within spitting distance from the Ultegra weight and the shifting is so smooth and crisp with those R400 cable replacement.

If I went mechanical I will go 105

Those were were so ugly, only a mother could love them...

Thanks for the responses - I'm happy to hear that there doesn't seem to be much difference apart from weight.

In terms of robustness in a sprint, are they also similar? i.e. Changing gears at close to 1,400w ? Is is pretty much just weight, and that there shouldn't be reliability issues in a sprint?

Thanks,

I think changing gears at 1400w on anything is a very very bad idea...

Agreed - but not many other option in a sprint  . I assume then that any of the group sets it will do just as much harm, so might as well go with the new 105

If you putting out that much power then you should probably be riding a sponsored bike with dura ace on...............
