Hi all.

Just a thought but is the price of bike socks just crazy. I mean R140 for one pair of socks. when i know it dose not cost more than R40 for one pair. just saying

So you joined bikehub to voice your opinion on the price of cycling socks?

Some okes have friends selling their bikes on their behalf because it's too much of a hassle to create an account to sell their own bikes, But you've done it just to post about the price of socks! They could learn a thing or 2 from you!

gotta love flea markets! I pay R25 a pair for cycling socks, CAM and Versus to name a few

LOL at my Mrs work place, every pay day they have a market day where vendors sell off stuff, Theybwere selling Versus, Sexy Socks, Cam and another brand for R15 per pair. Albeit they are the "samples", You will never really know the difference.

Mrs had a chat with the lady and she said she gets them from the factory as they are all the sample pairs made up which didn't quite "make the cut".

I personally have never bought them as I myself am an entrepreneur so I wouldn't want people buying the samples which I dont believe the factory should be selling off, But hey, some people do and I shall not judge because some people can afford R15 and not R140 for a pair.

This whole "local made socks" is quite interesting to me. They are made by imported machines with imported yarns. The only thing local is the jockey driving the machine and the coal power to fire it up

If you are employing one South African to manufacture that sock, you are part of the solution.

Works for me.

agreed, but don't make it a major selling point!

When I worked in the banking industry I had a client I used to visit often, he made seamless clothing.

Was an awesome machine from Italy that you developed the garmet(with logos etc) and fed into the machine then out popped an entirely seamless... whatever.

What he told me that was quite interesting is the seamless underwear they were making was made from the same yarns etc and same tolerances but was sold at different stores for wildly different prices.

For instance Mr P was selling them at R59 a pair and Woolworths was selling them at R169 a pair.

They were identical except for the logos.

really what Im trying to say is that people will often pay more for the perception of quality.

I own a bunch of different socks from Stance, Versus, Falke etc. They all do the same job, just some have nicer designs and a name that attracts a premium price really.

This whole it only cost x amount to make why must I pay Y always baffles me.

Do you expect companies to not make a profit ?

An item is worth what people are willing to pay for it, so if people are willing to pay R300 for a pair of socks that cost R40 to make because the brand is seen as more premium then that what they will be sold for.

Using that as an example...

A guy imports water filters and starts marketing them as affordable units at a very competitive price point with enough profit to make a good living. Units don't sell as they are seen to be cheap (Market research after launch). He persists for a few months and sales just don't take off. He pulls his product from the market, waits a few months and relaunches the exact same product under a new name but this time as a premium item with a price tag to match. Sales are good and keep getting better. He makes more money!

Maybe not quite the best comparison but it is all about what the wearer perceives to be good value.

Personally if I see a pair of cool socks, I go, "Cool socks  " I don't really care what brand they are. Likewise when I buy socks (although I mainly ride with plain black socks bought from Woolies. I also wear then to work...) I have a brown pair with mustaches on and a blue pair with liquorice all sorts on but I am not stylish enough to rock those with cycling shoes.

Styleman however might be tempted to take me down if he saw my socks... I suppose at the level that I ride I gain no performance from expensive socks.

There is definitely an element of perceived value with every item.

The brand I work for is not seen in the same light as its competitors in SA, therefore we are forced to sell at cheaper prices.

Yet, in Europe they are seen as on par if not better than their competitors and the pricing there reflects that.
