Jewbacca Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 Huh? Can someone please elaborate? What did I miss? There was talk that he might be walking away from road cycling sooner rather than later. I remember it being post 2020 or something.
Vetplant Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 There was talk that he might be walking away from road cycling sooner rather than later. I remember it being post 2020 or something.Interesting. Did not know that. It is a valid option, as he has probably gotten close to achieving all that he can in road cycling given his talent set and not wanting to go for GC in Grand Tours. Wonder if he will stay in sport but just change to a different code...? Luckily the up-and-coming next generation will bring the entertainment if he does decide move to something else... MvdP, WvA, RE
Frosty Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 maybe a chance for maincheese Maybe the French Foreign Legion had something to do with the top guys “crashing” out... maybe 2019 is a year for the Frogs to finally win their own Tour.

MvdP, WvA, REThe plan is to ride the Giro in 2020.. .think he may want to try ride Tokyo 2020 on the dirt..Giro would work better for that goal[emoji6] But yes I think sags baby will slowly move away from road, however Spez have extended their partnership with Bora... think a lot will depend on if he manages to win the TDF green Jersey one more time to hold the record .
Wayne pudding Mol Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 Nibs said he would be going for Polka but I wonder if he might be tempted to go for yellow now.
kosmonooit Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 So what are the chances of an generation-change upstart taking the Yellow honors this year?
dsw Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 So what are the chances of an generation-change upstart taking the Yellow honors this year? I do not think the chances of such a rider winning this year are good. The only new generation young rider who has the proven class and who rides for a strong enough team to win the TdF this year is Egan Bernal. He is however likely to play a supporting role to Thomas and will therefore probably not be in a position to challenge for overall honours. A lot can happen of course (crashes etc..) but I think the winner will be an experienced rider like Thomas, Landa, Fuglsang or Bardet with Thomas the outright favourite if he can stay upright.

Pinot showed decent form at the Dauphine too... I also can't see a rank outsider winning yellow, but the other 2 jerseys look like they will be hotly contested.

Read on cyclingnews that Bling has structured all his training on supporting Dumoulin and that he has not done the necessary speed work etc in order to be ready to contest for the green. It will be very interesting to see the final team selections.

I feel they should have pulled the plug on TommyD after his crash and slashed up knee. There are some great looking stages, so I am hoping we can see some Linus Gerdemann long range heroics and a few days in yellow for someone deserving. But then I say that every year and seldom does it pan out. A broken clock is right twice a day, so if I predict it every year........
scotty Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 So what are the chances of an generation-change upstart taking the Yellow honors this year?He would need a strong team and most of the GC contender teams have experienced riders with pedigree.
Frosty Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 Well, we now know that Maincheese is not on the long list of DDD riders going to the Tour.
kosmonooit Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 We will see about Gee I guess, but I am not holding my breath... and a Wigo / Froome situation could develop with Egan being held back... ? he is looking in great form @ Tour de Swizz, Gee hasn't really shown up or played his cards as yet this year.

Tough call.... on the one hand you have the current TdF champion who has paid his dues through the years for the team and on the other hand you have a 22 year old prodigy who has done this year much more than Gee.
dev null Posted June 23, 2019 Posted June 23, 2019 If the frogs don't take the win this year, they never will. I expect a strong challenge from the youngsters from Belgium and the Netherlands, but I doubt any of them will podium. I also expect Nibs will be playing silly buggers. I fully expect him to go for a GC win.
