Tour de France 2019

Guys are super quick to spank all over Bernal, but in truth not many 22 year olds are, or have been capable of winning a Grand Tour.

3 weeks is a helluvu long time to stay physically and mentally sharp.

I'm not convinced him riding super domestique for Gee is 'holding him back'. I would see that as 'developing his talent' and 'adding more substance to his promise'.

I think Ineos would be brave and a little silly to put all their eggs at TDF in his basket. In a few years time, if he continues his rapid development and positive gains, definitely.

But now let him develop as a super dom, learn race tactics, team work, sit through a few grand tours and stay injury free.

Rushing a guy ahead of a proven winner on glimpses is unfortunately all the rage these days and rarely does it pay off, in any sport.

True but the guy is an exceptional talent and maturity beyond his years in my opinion.

The scenario I was referring to was if (and quite possibly when) Gee falters in his defense, do they let Egan go up the road? I would venture to say he will get at least one mountain stage podium, the GC..... can't rule that out. Also lets not forget all the collective wisdom in that team, and he is also a fantastic team player.

Also a great bike handler, did you see him handle the wobble on the TT bike yesterday? Right now I am watching him giving it horns down a wet Alps mountain road with Rohan Dennis

There is no doubting his talent.

But this is a 3 week, no THE 3 week grand tour.

There will be other massively talented and vastly more experienced riders with teams behind them.

I hope he does develop into an amazing GC talent. He certainly ticks all the boxes. But I am loath to say 'he is being held back by having to super dom for Gee'.

During an interview just after he won the Swiss Tour Bernal said that Gee will be the team leader at the Tour and that has no problem to work for him ( "if he is stronger than me'). He further said he is only 22 years old and has many grand tours ahead of him.

Basically, the way I understand it is that he will give 100% support to Gee on condition that Gee proves during the tour that he is the stronger of the 2.

Sounds fair to me specially taking into consideration that Gee has done nothing so far this year and might be undercooked.

I was filled with mischief and added the word ‘stage’

Just to boost the little Colombian

But you caught me, Commissaire

Don't worry, at first I didn't understand what the tweet (@caferoubaix) was about, so I had to dig a bit before I eventually understood it... that's when I noticed you had staged the results.

Perhaps the Under Cover Investigators (UCI) will try cover it up, and no-one will be any wiser.

If the frogs don't take the win this year, they never will.

I expect a strong challenge from the youngsters from Belgium and the Netherlands, but I doubt any of them will podium. I also expect Nibs will be playing silly buggers. I fully expect him to go for a GC win.

I don't think they will - they have nothing for even the remains of Ineos etc.

Dan Martin for TDF win!!!

Dan Martin for TDF win!!!

Some of the more prominent bookmakers have him at about 66/1 so if you are really confident that he will make it you have an opportunity for a very good return :)

I reckon Astana have a proper shot this year. A lot of their riders have been in amazing form, Fuglsang is looking strong and who knows what they put in the water there......

FDJ have a decent team for the frogs. Pinot seems boisterous this year, which shows confidence.

I reckon Ineos is a team divided. From my couch I think they are unsure who to back and seem fractious. As shown by Movistar and T-mobile in the past, a team with too much going on in the background doesn't often yield the best returns, despite the oodles of talent on the start line.

Yes, there will be. Stay tuned.

Cool - Thank you

BTW last year there was some silly thing called substitutes which if possible should be removed from the rules…
