I just had a yummy brunch at FreeFood (for the joburg people)

Yea they call it a burger but there was no attempt to make it taste like meat.

It's also gluten / wheat free place so no bread.

Now maybe one of their yummy vegan cakes.

We did the vegan thing for two weeks.

While two weeks is basically just dipping your toes into a lifestyle, I really really really missed a lot of stuff. We also cut added sugar out of our diets.

My wife is an amazing cook, and there was some really good meals that will be made again soon. Spicy delicious Currys and salads etc.

I missed cappuccinos, I missed decent sauces, I missed the texture of meats, and non of the meat replacements we tried came close.

But cutting out meat and sugars did leadme to drop 5kg over two weeks, and by cutting down on the portions afterwards and eating less meat than I did (tradisionele Afrikaanse dieet) I'm keeping the weight down.

Lessons learned:

I can live without meat. But I didn't enjoy eating most days.

Peter meal planning and prep is key to being nourished if you are in the platteland. Eg. You won't find a quick vegan option In Swellendam Checkers unless you eat salad or slap chips.

You need to really be motivated to want to keep meat or animal products out of your diet. If you don't have a conscious reason then that kite probably won't fly. I don't, so I'm eating meat again. Just less of it.

Braaiing and eating veggies while your mates eat meat sucks.

So this weekend we are going camping, we'll eat salads and veggies, but I will be braaiing.

Why would a vegan want to eat a faux egg with a runny yolk? Isnt eating something resembling the nourishment of a growing embryo just a little weird?

And a vegetable patty that looks like minced meat.. Why?

Its not the taste that has put vegans or otherwise off certain foods. Its the full spectrum that it represents. The thread has also narrowed it down to 3 things - health, ethics and environment. (if I remember correctly...) I stopped eating animals because of the health aspects initially. Its not because I don't like how x tastes nor really how it looks, its what I believe its doing to me. Strange (or not) the ethical and environmental side has quickly built credibility and importance in my eyes.

I challenge people to not like how a boerie braai smells, or the favourite - bacon... But thats not the point. Is it personally worth you ticking off those 3 things I mentioned?

For everyone that's an easy choice to make.

Nice one, I've learnt of 3 veg friendly places this week! Lexi's in Sandton, Casting Cafe (super skeptical about this name...) in Rosebank and this one!

Sweet Chilli Twister from KFC, or a Calamari wrap from Fishaways - much cheaper

That weight loss is probably more a result of cutting the sugars and portion sizes than the meats itself. Just before the church claims this as their doing too.

Defs the sugars. I had headaches for four days from the sugar withdrawals.

Even something like tomato sauce has sugar in. It's crazy.
