Sunrace 12spd VS NX eagle

So, I would like to go 12spd to gain some top end and have a closer gap between gears, currently on a 1x10...

Question is, I need an upgrade kit and the options are between the sunrace kit at CWC, or an NX kit from wherever... I'm not totally concerned with weight, more reliability and longevity. I assume even if I initially went NX I would replace with sunrace bits anyway, so I suppose it could come down to sunrace shifter and derailer vs NX...

Any opinions?

The Sunrace stuff is still brand new on the market.

Other than the testers you won't find anyone who has had it for more than a couple of months.

The SRAM deraileurs are hardly reliable, so for 2600 bucks and not having to replace your freehub, I would consider it your best option.

By all accounts the reviews thus far have been favorable.

I'm also interested in this

Weight saving aside a bike shifter and derailleur is hardly rocket science and Sunrace has been in the business of making these things for a very long time, from my experience just not near the upper end of the market as they are doing now.

Yeah, but I think Joss is looking for a long term review or opinion of which there aren't any.

That article shows it to appear great out the box but no idea of how it goes after a few months.

I maintain that at R2700 (or whatever) for a cassette, shifter, RD and chain, it's completely worth trying out.

You're right jewey, that was my question...

But as you've pointed out, 2700 is a tiny gamble.... I just read that suntour says the shifter is compatible with a Shimano 11psd derailer so it's an easy upgrade if the derailer from suntour is really ***...

Neither Sunrace or NX will help with top end as the smallest gear is 11 teeth which I imagine is the same as the smallest gear on your 10 speed cassette. For a top end boost you need GX or higher which will have the 10 tooth gear.

Well it gives me the option to rather go with a 34 or 36 chainring instead of the 32 I'm running now, because the 32/42 combo I'm running now is great... So the largest 50 tooth can compensate for granny and top end can get back to normal... Without XD

So I had 10 speed with a 32T chain ring and 11-42 out back.

Been for a while now on 11 speed with a 34T chain ring and a Sunrace cassette which is 11-50 and it all works very well.

I thought I may need a smaller chain ring maybe a 32T or 30T however the 34T gives a good top end and just enough to climb most climbs with.

Hi

Just got GX for my dad on a xmas bike, he had XT 11/42 on his old bike. The one thing I didn't think about was the shifting using your index finger on Shimano which as it turns out is a must for my dad as his thumb goes numb during a ride.

so if shifting with your index finger is important don't go NX/GX....

Obviously having the bigger climbing gears mean you can run a bigger chainring up front, but imho the biggest gain is with the 10 tooth.

But the maths just doesn't agree with opinion... You're one tooth larger on the bottom end but 4 larger up front? It's gonna be faster... Sure, it won't be as fast as a 10/36 but by then you're just getting silly on a MTB...

Hummm. when I actually stop using my brakes on a down then I might worry about the 10 vs 11 tooth. TBH it's not often Im pushing hard and spinning out on a 30t / 11 so that's not an issue for me. obviously for the more watt focused boy that extra tooth might be the killer deal but also then maybe you need to be marginal gaining it on the road.

Sunrace are hardly new in the game and have been about for at least 30+ years as far as I know. Sure they aren't that sexy and don't do be fanfare releases aka SRAM / Shimano. There have been some good reviews recently online (google is your friend) and some drive train sets listed on le hub as well in the last few weeks at very good prices.

I have just bought a NX full groupset from CRC this week for £203 using the method a fellow hubber posted. That's crank, mech, shifter, chain, BB, cassette, front ring (will you hard core mofo's judge me because I went 170 cranks and 30 up front??). Shipping was free to SA without VAT etc and the price was far too good pass especially as i don't have to shell out for a new free hub. Thank the lord!! trying to find a spank free hub in XD is not fun or cheap and works out to be nearly most of the cost of the groupset! Reviews have been stellar and to be honest I'd rather be on XT as I like the shifters and the precise nature of it all but you know it's good to experiment. I've had GX before and it was a bit 'meh' when comparing with shimano but I felt I should like it as the edgey new comer.

That said I'd consider the Sunrise without a doubt. I've been using their cassettes for awhile and they re very durable but the best bit is their ratios are spot on for a 11 - 46. Way better then Shimano.

Went full NX 1x12 a month ago with 36t front ring. For me it is the perfect combo as I have never maxed out on revs on fast roads and the granny gear has only been used on the really steep hills. The only reason to go 10-50 cassette would be to save 300g, which is not worth it for me anyways... No regrets, very happy
