Built in three years and cost less than the Runway 3 @ Heathrow plan  #GoChina

Wha ha. Then I present to you ... the new Berlin Airport.  Took 15 years to design, construction started in 2006.  Was due to open Oct 2011. We are now 8 years later and they are hoping it would be completed by 2021.  The new Berlin Aiport is the biggest joke in Germany.

Awesome images (not mine) from the Brisbane Riverfire flyby's over the weekend.

Budget cuts must be kicking in, as they just had single F18's and the C17, and no Tiger & Taipan helicopters.

The Friday lunchtime F18 practice was great - the initial run-in to the city is right by my work (my office is next to the river). Pilot misjudged his height a bit and he was far lower than his official minima - made for a spectacular fly-by. On the day though he was substantially higher - either he had been read the riot act or he realised he had overcooked it on practice.

Some butt-clenching moments there! Bet those boat operators were surprised.

Reminds me of the old Hong Kong airport where you pretty much landed in town after seeing what everyone was watching on TV in their apartments

Yip, Kai Tak. Must have been a tough one for pilots as well.

When I was a youngster SAA had an open day and I remember being in one of the fligh simulators where the Pilot/Instructor said that the pilots used to practise extensively in the simulator for Kai Tak as it was at the time the most difficult international airport to land.

It couldn't have been lekker living there. The noise must get a bit irritating. A friend of mine stayed in kempton, his house was basically on the centre line for 03L(he was in Dann road), every few min everyone stops talking, waits for the aircraft to pass and then carries on talking. The TV would also go a bit fuzzy each time an aircraft went over head. Even for someone that loves aviation, it got a bit much.

A co-worker at my previous company is quite big on flightsim.  Got a whole multimonitor setup at home and from the sound of it spends quite a bit of time on it.  I am itching a bit to try it out as well

I have(had, he retired on Monday) a work colleague that is also big into it. He flies routes on sim in real time a week or so before actually doing it for real. He is Welsh and goes to see his Mom every year so he literally took off from JNB and 11 odd hours later land at LHR, I kid you not. He has also "flown" every aircraft he has worked on. Funny thing is, we were on a full time type course together about 2 years back and part of our sim training includes flying(in case we ever on board and have to sort an issue) so we usually do the training and then do some flying for fun. I managed to take off and land a A330-300 safely and he managed to kill us all on landing. Must have been beginners luck for me.

I beleive there are also guys who do ATC in the virtual world and might even be connected to those flying flights sims.  Its like there is a whole virtual aviation world out there.

Yeah, no jokes, there are real people doing virtual ATC all over. I have seen it done for X-plane and Flight sim. Quite insane the commitment some show.
