i.e. cram as many seats in as possible

LOL no. So on some of our flights we require a certain type of layout. It is called boutique. With this layout, first class is all isle seats. So a row is 1-2-1. The current layout is 2-2-2 meaning the window is not and isle. Then the IFE(In Flight Entertainment-movies etc) needs to also match the rest of our fleet. It is not like the old days where you had a video tape player and you put in the video and the safety video plays and it's a random movie. It is now a whole network where you can select movies and customise so we need to load our software and then make sure each and every screen is working properly.

I have not seen the inside of the 2 hainen ones yet but apparently the leather is orange. We will have to keep it for now as obviously we got no money to get new seats.

Someone must just mention it reminds them of the old SA flag and those seats will be changed promptly, even if it is just applying shoe polish to change it.

Please make sure it works.  My last flight on SAA to JHB the Monitors and controls between my seat and my daughters was swopped around.  Bloody annoying.

How DOES the IFE work these days. You mention a network, I'm assuming a network local to teh plain with some sort of media server type of setup ?

Thanks, Lotus.

Yeah it was a big shock last night when all the messages started coming in saying we not getting paid on time. We get paid on the 27th usually. They have not told us how much later we being paid. The company is meeting with the lenders today at 14H00 to discuss it. The story doing the rounds is the R2bn we were about to get(which is not a government bailout) was going to be paid to us by a number of lenders(banks/loan sharks/I don't know who else) and now with the strike, some of them have pulled out as naturally they worried we can't pay them back(can you blame them).

As most of you know, we got a new CEO for Technical a few months ago. His first full month was October and although we(the company, not technical) still made a loss, the loss was the lowest for a good number of years and it is apparently thanks to the new CEO of Technical. He has already fired 5 people in upper management roles at Technical and given final written warnings to numerous others. He has employed a new GM of HR that was an outside employment of his choice that has also already tightened the screws. There is apparently 1 bad apple on the board that the striking unions as well as the rest of the unions want out BUT she is a political appointment so currently as slippery as oil.

I am on the mechanical side. If it has wires, I don't touch it so unfortunately I have no idea how it all works. I will find out for you as I have a good buddy that works in IFE and is part of actually re-doing these systems.

How's about coming in to work and facing this as your first job of the day?

Do you have the background story to the photo?  Looks like brakes that overheated that might have caused the tires to have popped.  Judging by the water around it I assume it was extinguished.

Philippine Airlines #PR113 to Manila returned to Los Angeles after flames were seen from right engine. The Boeing 777-300ER (reg. RP-C7775) suffered a failure (compressor stall) on right engine. The crew immediately declared a mayday and requested return to LAX after takeoff. The aircraft landed runway 25L and was met by emergency services. Due to the weight of the Boeing 777 (full tanks), all tires of the main gear exploded. No injuries were reported

Wondering when they exploded...? on touch down, or after a while in the landing run due to heat caused by overloading...

Rims don't look too schamgled.

I guess after declaring a Mayday on one engine, dumping fuel wasn't an option

From what I read on one aviation site, the objective was (and always is) to put the plane back down on the ground immediatley, regardless of anything else.

Also it said that the tyres are designed to "explode and deflate to prevent them catching fire" from the super hot brakes. When exactly they explode, I don't know.

Maybe someone can confirm or refute the explanation . . . .
