So how the wheel story.

The limit to change a wheel differs depending on the airport. So it says that if a base station does the inspection and the limit has been reached, change the wheel BUT it then allows, if you at an out-station and you reach the same limit, you can snag it and it can do one more sector provided it is a sector back to the base station. So if for eg it was due to fly JNB-CPT-ELS-JNB and CPT saw the tyre was worn and needed to be changed, they either have to change it, ground the aircraft or cancel the ELS route and send it back to JNB. Now we went through a stage where we were changing wheels that had been snagged by CPT like there was no tomorrow and they kept using this Manual reference to avoid changing the wheel. Then one day we have a JNB guy go down to CPT to help out for a few weeks and he checks that they have all the equipment and a few spare wheels lying in the store. He comes back and tells us all this. So now every time we chat to the CPT guys we bite them and say they scared to change wheels. So if you ever meet one of the SAAT CPT technicians, ask him when last he changed a wheel..............

With CPT being so close to the Cape flats I would have assumed they are more used to just removing the wheels and leaving the aircraft supported on a few bricks and they are not used to putting wheels back on. :whistling:

My first model kit in 24 years after being prompted to rediscover the hobby by my son. Academy 1/48 F 111C in Australian colours- a great and dramatic subject. I learnt that airbrushing is going to be required going forward - masking and brush painting didn't seem to work well for me. Although this particular kit is well known for bad seams, handling poor joints is another improvement area for me. However, I enjoyed myself and thats what counts. As hobbies goes, it may not be cheap, but the cost per hour spent is pretty reasonable -it has kept me busy from Christmas Day.

Learning how to take good photos of the final product is an art form in itself that I still need to master.

Please note the pigeon toeing of the pylons is due to an internal swiveling mechanism that rotates the pylons together with the wings. A great party trick, but in hindsight maybe I should have just decided on a fixed wing sweep angle and ditched the mechanism. Although research did indicate that the pylons did exhibit a degree of similar behaviour in the real world....

Thats another thing - I have really enjoyed having the internet to do the research on colours, units, load-outs, histories and anecdotes on the subject. Back in my youth you had the box art and that was about it !

Thanks - much appreciated. Luckily nothing too close to us in Brisbane, although yesterday was pretty hazy from smoke from a smaller fire on one of the islands offshore (about 60 km away as the crow flies).

On topic, Qantas cancelled flights on Sunday afternoon into Canberra due to smoke and pyro-cumulus clouds.

And it is a 737-800 this time.  Really starting to feel sorry for Boeing.  I am wondering what is going to happen now. With the current love for Americans I wonder how much Boeing and the FAA will be involved in the investigation.  Bit of a f..up at the moment.

Yeah they have had a few bad incidents in the last few years. I wonder if this was an aircraft issue or an act of terrorism? Looks like the aircraft was only 4 years old.

Think it was an accident.

Think it was an accident.

Probably. But also a coincidence that it happened while missiles are flying in and out of Iran?

An accident would be the lessor of 2 evils for the world as a whole. Terrorism with all that is going on now may cause something we don't want.

I don’t see the point of it being an act of terrorism

But being in Teheran it is bloody highly coincidental “accident”

I bet the Boeing accident investigation team are all calling in sick.....

Yes, CPT area

So you and allouette3 chat every now and then

Flying paint stirrers, we don't know how to file flight plans and get altitude sickness when under area control!

Flying for Cape Town Helicopters up the West coast on offshore ops, actually in Luderitz at the moment for a couple more weeks. Occasionally do freelance at Aerios Global on my rotations home.
