Thanks, makes perfect sense actually

I once dropped a little mik-en-druk camera in the sea while kayaking and was told to put it in fresh water first for a few hours before trying to dry it out, I think for exactly the same reason. Still lost the little camera but the memory card at least was fine.Bought a waterptoof one after that.

yeah in our boating days the first thing you did when you got back to GP was run fresh water through the motor and make sure you wash off any salt water anywhere.

That happened with my dad's old Mamiya. Poor camera was never the same after that.

Actually I wonder about this....

These days they use solid state memory chips instead of magnetic tape so might be more resistant to corrosion / oxidation problems.

Anyway, maure they know better and it’s better to take all precautions

FDR being prepared for the readout by the Indonesia authorities

That oven they used at the end looked like one we had in a lab I used to work in years ago. We used it for environmental testing of small scale oscillator circuits. Can't remember what the range of our was - but it was something like -50C to 500C. We'd put circuits in it and leave them running while it ran through a pre-programmed range of temps.

Interesting that they have ordered inspections of other similar aircraft in Indonesia

Sriwijaya B735 at Jakarta on Jan 9th 2021, lost height and impacted Java Sea Update:

On Jan 19th 2021 the KNKT reported that the FDR contained 330 parameters of a total of 18 flights. The KNKT have already developed a general picture of the accident, however, need further data from the cockpit voice recorder before publishing any information. Inspections of Boeing 737-300, 737-400 and 737-500 in Indonesia have been ordered.

Interesting that they have ordered inspections of other similar aircraft in Indonesia....

"According to KNKT, the flight data recorder (FDR) was filled with 370 flight parameters from 27-hour flight recording, which is in total 18 flights that include its tragic final flight"

“From the data we obtained we recovered a number of data crucial for the investigation,” said KNKT aviation accident investigation sub-committee chief, Nurcahyo Utomo, in a video message on January 19.

If they only look at aircraft in Indonesia could that point to maybe a specific maintenace procedure/issue?
