Broken Stem

Hi

As I am a newbie, I took my MTB to Cyclelab on Sunday for a proper setup, it turned out that the stem on my handlebar was a bit long, so they replaced it with a smaller "Ryder" stem.

As I got home I realised that the brand new stem has cracked.

My wife took my bike back to the store yesterday for them to check it out - my initial thoughts were that it was perhaps over torqued. They replaced the stem with a new "Ryder".

Last night as I prepped my bag for today's ride I saw once again that the second new stem has cracked. As before, I did not touch my bike at all, the stem just seems to break on its own.

What can it be? How do I resolve this issue as I don't have much confidence getting on my bike should they replace the stem again today.

Is Ryder a knock off brand?

Over torque'd

Bad batch

Handlebar diameter perhaps smaller than the stem

Ryder has been around for sometime, and over lifetime warranty, so to say they are a knock off brand not quite. Difficult to say how it was caused, but that looks terminal

I've had several Ryder stems. At one point i had one in every size because I loan them to friends I was helping with bike fit. None of them ever broke.

The stem on your bike has definitely been overtightened. Look at the non existent gap between the face plate and the stem body.

you need a better local bike shop .......fast!

Tell them you want your money back - And then go to a proper bike fit specialist - I use Aaron Brown at CycleFit - Costs more but like I said they are proper

What baffles me, is the fact that two different people replaced the stems.

1st replacement done by the tech setting up the bike.

2nd replacement done by the workshop.

This made me think that it was perhaps poor quality equipment they fitted.

Ryder generally offers good value products.

Possible that they had a bad production run.

Surely even the worst mechanics/technicians/sales people couldn't over torque twice to that extreme.?

if anything, a smaller bar will just slip out. Most likely over torqued (general consensus) and at the entry level of stems, the bolts may be stronger and don't shear.

But in all honesty, the part breaks into 2 pieces and then cracks along the central spine suggests a high tension in the upper bolts

Ryder offers a lifetime warranty on their products. Definitely not a knock off brand, the only thing thats a knock off here is the bike "mech" that over tightened your face plate.

Take it back, insist on a refund and find a better bike shop to do business with. Even with the best products when installed incorrectly could cause catastrophic failure and incur medical/dental costs

If it's been over tightened, check your handle bar for damage.

If they over tightened the bolts on the bar, they may have done the same to the steerer. Also check that for damage especially if it's carbon.

With this in mind id actually have the bike checked thoroughly before riding again

If you went to Cyclelab on Lynnwood I'm not surprised - I mean the majority of sales people there looks like they just came out of school, the power of the youffff - "jonk and jikkerig"  :D

Ryder is a good product as everyone before me has mentioned  :P. There's a list of other bike shops in and around the PTA east area I would much rather suggest - 4-5 comes to mind.

Get a new stem and do not let them fit it for you  :whistling:
