The "Village" Colnago Master © Morph

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd start a new build thread, this one is going to take a while before complete so we'll have lots of time for debate.

So far this is the plan:

  1. Find a suitable quill stem or buy a dodgy quill stem adapter for testing purposes.
  2. Build up the master using available 10s Record and Campagnolo "two tonne (in reference to weight)" wheels.
  3. Test ride the bike as I'd usually ride a 55-56 TT and this is a 57 TT with a similarly long seat tube. I took this chance buying it because they are like hens teeth to find and my C59 had a 565 TT and that fit well - Yoga will solve the rest if needed  :whistling:
  4. If it fits nicely then a full restoration is in order, if it doesn't some lucky (slightly taller) hubber can have a ride
  5. On the hopefully likely chance that all fits well. I'm currently considering a number of master finishes, photos below.

So... who has quill stems lying around and what finish does she deserve?

I know a guy slightly taller than you......

I have just scrounged a  quill stem to sort out my master - you are welcome to my dodgy adapter until you can find a quill - there are some quills in the classifieds but getting matching bars not so easy - unless someone knows better

I know that guy too

An appropriate quill and bars is the trick. Might take you up on the adapter if I don't win. I think Solomons was getting stock of adapters at about R200 which is ok for test riding purposes.

What are the measurements on your frame?

JMK has bars and I think Deda have a quill too with matching bars - R99 postnet for the stem adapter is cheaper than solomans

This colour scheme does it for me

Following keenly

I'll check my spares stash to see if I can find a quill stem otherwise check the Vintage classifieds, there were one or two on there a while back.

3ttt GP bars

ITM Post

he'll post some pics later

I'll check out the bars and stem, did see one posting but the ones I saw looked a little corroded, will double check these.

For me i like the look of the Mapei colours but everyone seems to be re-spraying in that scheme.

The Saronni red would be my choice.

I love Saronni too, but also know a few others who've gone this route locally as well (*looks at Cippo). I haven't seen anyone locally do the Zabel version yet.

This, I think, is the all time classic red version. Down to the fine detail. Again, I think, because I don't know them well enough to say, I know.

This is awesome, that's page is where the last pic in my original post comes from. If that's an original Piu scheme then its definitely in top 3 on the list.

Here's the proposed groupset which I think I want to get restored and mirror polished for the final product. I will however put the black brakes on my CT1 and move the silver ones over for the Master build.

Hi. Check under the Road classifieds. There was a ITM Colnago quill stem posted at about 08h00 this morning.

Thanks, have asked to confirm measurements as ideally I probably need a 90mm but it looks nice!

I have a few quill stems and bars lying around somewhere. What do you need?

Initially I just need to test ride, but then I need some nice appropriate Italian ones for the build. If you have anything between 80 and 100 in stems then let me have a look. I have some old 7075 ITM bars that would need a refurb but silver is probably better too?
