Race to the Sun - Advendurance drops the ball, twice!

Why are you guys so unprofessional, ignoring emails, stuffing up vital info??

 

Makes me think this is a race to avoid if your team cocks up even basic things like the op mentioned. Sounds like an organisation that doesn't know it's ass from it's elbow, I can only imagine how bad vitally important things like water tables and medic could potentially be during the race.

 

 

Their medics are excellent as long as you don't need them.

 

 

I've been on the receiving end of an event with badly organised medics.

 

vomiting and dehydrated I had to wait over and hour in 35deg heat (No shade) for medics

 

first and last time I'll support the event

Surprised by Advendurance this is not like them but that doesn't help the OP.  Doing my first one this year but have a lift to the start and back from the finish.  

 

May I suggest a search of Race to the Sun on YouTube and then after watching, those with gravel bikes can argue on Friday why a mountain bike came in first.

One guy I spoke to that rode it on his gravel bike with "skinny" tyres said the corrugations, sand and ruts held them up.  I don't have a gravel bike but if a guy who finished in the top 10 last year is doing it this year on his mtb then I think I will use his experience.

 

Of course the mtb that came in first could have been wheel sucking the gravel guys along the way, who knows?

I’ll just put this here so you can decide, I believe a gravel bike will be much faster (harder yes).

BTW ladies winner was on a gravel bike (32nd overall)

Jinne. And I was thinking of dropping 1.7" tyres on my MTB. Not so sure now. May just stick with my 2.25s.

FWIW, the guys at Dunkeld Cycles say exactly this. Some guys ordered gravel bikes before the race but these were only to be delivered later. Aftee having done the race on MTBs they decided to rather not buy the gravel bikes as they reckoned the MTBs do better. Dunno. Hearsay. But remember - last year's conditions are not this year's conditions. District roads can change radically in a year.
