@ ChrisF -  That 50T is nasty!  :w00t:   Looks crazy big on the 26"

I am contemplating a similar move on my 26" , but don't think I will go to 50 in the back.

A 42 - 32 will probably get met through most stuff ..., especially on the smaller 26" wheels  ^_^

Thanks for sharing and for the photo's

JIP.  It looks BIG !

Trust that Maritz will only need that for the steepest hills .... true granny option.  Think (hope) the next gear will see action for most hills .....

currently working on getting him to be aware of his cadence ...

probably another three months before he can stand over the top tube of the Mongoose ..... going to be a long wait !  :cursing:

Actually with a 2x you could have the same insane low ratio.

Some 2x cranks come with 22, though the norm now is 24.

With a 32 in front paired to a 50 at the back you get a 0,64 ratio

A 2x with a 24 in front can be paired with the 36 at the back to give an even lower 0,63  :w00t:   The 2x then also provides a better top end ... so from a "range" perspective a 2x is still a very good option.

but MAN, I love the simplicity of only having to fiddle with a single gear ...

verkeerd uitgekom jammer.

I meant - you'll need the big cogs (42+) to make up for the fact that you don't have the 22-24T granny in the front.

so yes, your post is all true

We have just completed the upgrade from 3x9 to 1x11.

As it was a Shimano freehub, I was able to slip on the 11 speed Sunrace

To ensure a nice wide range we opted for the 11x50 Sunrace cassette.

It also meant getting a new shifter and derailure. Cheapest would have been an upgrade kit, but my local bike shop advised me to get the Shimano XT shifter and derailure, paired with the Sunrace cassette. It was only a few rand more expensive.

We were advised to keep the chain as long as possible, so that the hanger just clears when on the small gear at the back -

Worth noting (as in the last picture) that on the very large cogg the hanger is NOT stretched far forward .... try to avoid excessive strain on the hanger ....

It WORKS very nicely

It took some handtools and elbow-grease to finish off the 3x crank to fit the single ring neatly ...

And this is what the final product looks like

The finishing touch to that 3 x crank looks really good! Thinking I should try something like that on mine

I also have a 3x SLX  crank 24,32,42  and was wondering how to go about it to get it to a 1 x 32 or 34 ...

@ChrisF

Rather let the little oke run up a hill that steep than let him pedal it. I can never understand it when I ride past guys pedalling their mielies off in a stupidly low gear and they think they are getting somewhere.

Maybe us singlespeeders are different?

I remember how stupid I felt when struggling up Robber's pass outside Pilgrim's Rest in my smallest gear when I got passed by an old woman walking up with a bundle of wood on her head....

ps. Than was in the good old 39x19 days.....

totally with you guys on this.

I mean, most CX bikes are designed to be carried around the top tube. No point in pedalling 89567 RPM and going 1kph if you could walk faster at less effort. i'm assuming it is a ego thing? (as in im not on my bike peddling so I look weak?)

Part of me agrees with you 100%.  Fact is at the last event I deliberately walked up two short steep sections - did not event attempt to cycle up there.  Knowing that I would walk up there as fast as I could cycle up there, and catch my breath while doing it.

However, constantly adding hills into my rides I am now able to get up hills that were totally impossible for me 2 to 3 years ago.  So coming back from injuries it has paid off to hang in there.

At age 7 these hills must look like mountains to Maritz.  So step one is just to get to the top, peddling most of the way ... ride after ride he gets better at the same hill.

Last year he would have to "work" at some of those switch backs at B-Spot ... now he does not even drop the gears, just stand on the pedals and power up the short sections.

It is thus a two fold approach :

- get the muscles better to handle the climbs

- gently push the limits of the climbs ....

now doing this while keeping it FUN for a 7 year old ....  :whistling:   at the moment regular stops to take photos or to have a few sweets does the trick

With all that said - that is very much part of why I am getting him used to the concept of a good cadence ... as I believe that is the quickest way to get him away from those very big gears .....

certainly NOT easy finding the balance between "fun" and taking his riding to the next level .... if anything I am not pushing to hard, erring on the side of "fun" .... (at least I hope that is what I am doing).  The SPUR rides do help me to gain some perspective as to where he fits with his age group ..... skills wise I am happy, speed wise he was at the back of the pack, thinking he may be closer to mid-pack this year (on par with the 8 year old, way behind the 9 year olds in their group)

Hope you can keep it up. It's heartbreaking when your kid says it's not fun anymore, and they're not interested in riding any longer. My daughter just quit after years of commitment and it killed me
