Click in frame

Hi guys

I have a Giant XTC Team alu frame, which has been blasted and anodised.

There has been a click that sounds like it's coming from the top tube since I've had it.

If I rock the saddle fore and aft, by hand, standing next to the bike, it makes the noise.

And riding, it makes the noise seated, but not standing. I have tried another seatpost and saddle, and All the things that I can find here on the forum or google, to no avail.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Have you tried a new seat clamp or greasing every metal on metal contact point in the clamp/frame interface?

Dry clamp/frame surface is a common ticker...

No that you mention it, I should have tried another clamp.  I have extras at home.

My problem sorted itself out.

Remember a light layer of grease between the clamp and the frame as well. Small thing to overlook, but can cause lots of frustrating hours trying to find the problem.

You gonna think Im joking but take off your crank and grease where its needed, then if your chainring isnt a direct mount, remove those chainring bolts and grease the contact points (NOT THE THREADS) then put it all back.

I had a creak /click on my SIR9 singlespeed that I couldnt find for love or money when I got the frame. Clicked fom the very first ride after the build. I stripped that bike down a few times to the point where I wanted to throw that Eccentric BB in the trash and make an ornament out the frame... One day I changed the chainring so had to remove the bolts, new chainring and click was gone.

Couple of washes later, click was back, removed chainring, greased contact points and click was gone. I didnt even think of looking there ever and stumbled upon it by pure luck, now I know where to look.

No harm in trying

I had a creak that I was willing to put big money on was coming from my handle bars somewhere(old 26inch HT). Eventually after months of cleaning and torquing etc I serviced my BB and gone!!!!!! The sound resonates through the frame so it sounds like it's coming from a completely different spot. Very irritating.

My Anthem is prone to this problem as well, it drives me dilly. Every time I wash the bike I need to re-grease the seatpost. I'm now considering a thin bead of silicone around the top of the clamp after reassembling to avoid water getting in there and dragging muck with it.

Creak on Aluminium bike could come from anywhere. Frame transmits sound well. Another thing you can try is to push down on the frame with your weight when the bike is still and try get it to creak. On a hardtail this would indicate a crack somewhere if it creaks.

Otherwise as the others indicate, a process of elimination on possible sources.
