I have only heard good things about them. We have put up a system on the farm and are happy so far. The technicion that put the system up said that if you have an issue with the cameras they just replace it?? What is the problem?

They are supposed to be 1080HD but the quality is terrible. It's like looking through a front camera on a phone from 10yrs ago...

Are these IP or analog cameras?

Cant help on analog but the IP ones have lots of configuration possible - including the resolution and frame rates.

Analog. TBH I should have done more homework but after a break in a few weeks back I was in a rush to fit a system....seems Hikvision also has online security issues and the app is a pain in the ass....in hindsight I think I should have gone the IP route but I got a kit and 8 cameras for R5k odd so I thought I was scoring...!

Haha....ja....I usually don't buy in haste but lesson learnt....will apply myself a bit more on the alarm system I need to get fitted....!

There is the traditional analog which is relative low res and then also the HD version, uses the same coax cable but obviously the camera has to be in that mode and the DVR must support the HD Analog format.

It seems that the cameras are not technically HD cameras...they run a 1080HD Lite mode....from a bit of online reading it would appear that this is equates to about a quarter of the quality of genuine HD systems?

I recently replaced a bunch of my analogue cams with Foscam 2MP wireless IP cams.... what a win. Very easy to set up. and if you have the analogue cabling there you will already have power - so easy job.

Would definitely recommend going for IP cams.

And always match the focal length of the lens (most affordable CCTV cameras are fixed length) to the distance and angle you are trying to see.

Too many people buy 1.5mm or 2mm fixed length cameras and then wonder why they can’t see the milkman at the gate 20 meters away!

Whats the model numbers Mojo? I'll check ..

IP  cameras, hmm if can avoid them do. they can be troublesome, the wholesetup can be troublesome, if you can run coax cables. do.

Model numbers and we can help re res etc.

you get TVL - poor quality and old as the hills

720p - fair/good quality image

1080p lite - better than 720p

1080p better than 1080p lite

For these you can use coaxil cable or cat5 with baluns

then IP - 2,4,6,8.....MP better quality, but only rellay when doing digital zoom

But from 1080p lite you should not have image quality issues unless incorrect lens for application and you try and do digital zoom.

Re the App, which one of the many are you using. Latest one is HIK-Connect. No real issues that I have found.

Can you hook this up to be able to view footage remotely ?

From a perspective of someone who tries to fix others installations, I've seen a few painful IP camera situations:

- IP cameras randomly loose config, got no resolutions from Hikvision

- password are set and forgotten, cameras have to be reset to access

- cameras are hacked (uPnP gives the Internet access to them)

- settings are fiddled by people who don't know what they are doing

- balls-up  of wireless implementations

- they are more expensive that analog

- it you have a DVR you don't need all the functionality they offer

If you have DVR with analog ports it makes it much easier to maintain and keep working without hassles if you stick with analog cameras, the HD ones are good picture quality) > the KISS principle. Keep It Straight and Simple.
