Repair or Replace?

look at it this way...what is the worse thing that can happen...it goes flat and you have to walk back to the car...patch the thing and be done...maybe you are a lucky person and that is all that happens.

but if you are not and you ride on the road at times...look at it this way...what the worse that can happen it blows out at 40 km/hr on a down hill or corner...you slide down the road...dont hit anything or get hit by anything ...couple roasties and a couple days off work and a few sleepless night...its not that bad.

I have seen a few accident lately...and had one recently due to a bad decision ...the guy riding behind me couldnt believe i got up back on the bike and rode home.

I wish you luck...personally i would replace the tyre and if it is due to lack of funds...send me a pm and i will see if i have a spare tyre for you...it would make me feel better that you are safe.

Thanks for the advice. It's not due to lack of funds

I've actually replaced the tyre already but thanks for the offer.

go get a mushroom plug from  your LBS, to patch it from the inside, the glue plus added  air pressure should work fine,

Hi All,

So i'm at my wits end with my MTB tyre that keeps going flat. The tyre in question is a Spez Fast Trak Gripton 2 which I've had for about 2 years now.

I've plugged a puncture on the side wall twice now (see image) but every time it seems as though the plug is not sealing the hole and eventually the tyre goes flat within a day.

The question is now, do i replace the tyre seeing that it is a side wall puncture or is there another method of plugging the hole successfully?

Repair - What method?

Replace - What brand and model tyre. Tyre still has a bit of wear left (see image)

Did you donate it to a less fortunate rider?

Has anyone asked you for the tyre?

What did the new rubber cost in the end?

Rouxtjie will get at least another eleventy-thousand km's on that tyre. It's not tired yet.

On my Camber, my Purgatory and Ground Controls are still running with 4259 km and counting on the clock...I only plugged the Purgatory twice due to low sealant in all that time.

But as soon as the missus backs of from spending my hard earned cash (which now that I say so out loud, is probably never...), I shall be replacing both.

Be careful Robbie Stewart. Rouxtjie is back on form and riding again, so he will want to moer you when he sees this.

Landed up finding out that the sidewall was actually worse than i had initially anticipated and the tyre had to be thrown.

Replaced the tyre with a Maxxess Ardent for R750 fitted.

A couple years ago we lent out the old 26" bike to some kids. It came back a few weeks later looking a bit rougher with a slow puncture.

When I took the tube out it turns out the kids had fixed a puncture by tying off the section of tube where the hole was, isolating the hole. To tie it off they had used a condom! Take that, duct tape!

I've seen blowouts fixed by cutting out the blown bit and tying a knot in each end of what remains. As you inflate the tube fills the tyre (patched with a chip packet) and you're good to go. Rides a bit rough, but beats walking...

Ride with a small roll of gorilla tape...pretty sure you'll be able to mend a sheared of headtube on the go...a hole in a tire should be child's play
