94.7 Race with what bike?

My mission is just to finish it and not fall dead. So i want something that will my it easier for me to accomplish this......finishing

then get a road bike now and get your body used to the position.

The more aero position of a road bike places different strains on the body (and butt).

Having said that, my first 947 i went into very undertrained. The furthest distance I had ridden was 15km. Granted I was 20 years younger than today, but I still managed to drag myself to the finish line.

As long as you're not chasing a time you should be able to finish.

I've done the 94.7 for the past 4 years and always on the mtb with knobblies. It's two different riding positions and it does take some getting used to to learn either. I would just stick to what you're comfortable with.

I have friends who's done it on both and they've not seen massive drops in their times going from the one to the other.

It's a tough race on either and I would say that you need to focus your efforts more on your fitness levels and do not worry too much about the kit .

I also believe that good fitness levels and training will make the difference and the ride more "bearable" and much more fun!    Slicks does make for a nicer ride on the road in my opinion and will make you go slightly quicker.

And do you put in the same effort, when switching bikes. Or does the roady make it more bearable?

With the roadbike it is easier to stick with a group on flats and downhill sections, which saves allot of energy instead of riding alone against the wind in those sections.

Saving this energy means you have more in the tank to expend on the climbs, which is what makes the race difficult, having to do those 3987 little steap climbs when you reach Kyalami (Don’t trust all those boards telling you how many climbs are left, they all lie).

There is no doubt that you CAN finish the race on a MTB, no problem. But the road bike is the real tool for the job.

To make it even more enjoyable, do some Racetec timed events ASAP to get a seeding for an earlier startgroup, which means larger groups to pull you along and better temperatures. See the possible events at the link below. I think the last event they allow for seeding is somewhere towards the end of September IIRC.

My vote goes to getting a cheap road bike.

If you do decide to go roadie give yourself lots of time to get used to the riding position. I rode on a borrowed roadie for my first Argus and it was 100km of agony.

dunno, you're used to the MTB and riding position.

Maybe try sort the gearing out for the top end stuff and please stick a set of slicks on it, that friggin wrrrrrr wrrrrrr wrrrrr sound from knobblies on tar drives me crazy.

I just love that sound...

Does anyone have the profile for the event then i can try it on rouvy/zwift?

I'll try to upload it this evening (it's too big to upload on the forum (~4MB) and I don't have access to any file sharing sites at work).

as mentioned before, if you don't already have a road bike you might battle with the low gearing on the hills,

pump your tires to 4 bar, &  with the extra weight you will cruise down the hills and you will defiantly climb better with the gearing you already know and are used too
