130mm shock only has 90mm travel

I noticed recently that my RockShox Revelation is only at 90mm travel and not the 130mm I bought it with a couple of months ago. This is a used shock but I have never had issues with RockShox before. Previously I had a Reba with 100mm travel and it worked fine for 24,000km

Is this a known issue on the Revelation? I am concerned this might be a costly repair. One shop said they need to send it off to PE when I called and asked about it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You are in Stellies .... give William from Williams Bike Shop in Slummies a call .... or ultimately revert back to STOKE in CT.

Is it a dual air revelation? If so, air sometimes creeps from positive to the negative side. This causes a higher negative side, effectively suck IMG the fork down into its travel.

Dump some negative air, inflate positive, and then reinflate the neg to 5-10psi less than positive. If I am right, I hen you should have all your travel back again.

I have a similar issue on my fork, but this fix only lasts a short while. I suspect a seal / o-ring needs to be replaced.

Yep, Its either this, or to much oil in the damper side causing a hydraulic lockout.

How to tell?

Does the fork extend 130mm but only compress 90mm? Then its the Hydro lockout.

If the fork only extends 90mm its the air side. The fork will also feel very plush If this is the case. A good fix for this is to add a couple of ml's of fork oil to the positive air chamber. Oil is much thicker than air and because the oil will lie on top of the air piston's oring will keep the air out of the negative chamber.

If this doesn't work, try the oil in the positive air chamber.

Also remember to inflate the positive air first, then the neg.

You probably need to replace the seals separating the + and - air chambers. Probably best to replace the o rings at the bottom of the shaft as well in case air is passing from the negative chamber into the lower leg.

Solo air fork has positive and negative chambers, just self equalizing.

If it's only 90mm of stanchion showing, it's stuck down. If it's a dual air there's too much air in the negative chamber - let it out and reinflate till it sucks down by about 5mm.

If it's a solo air, inflate to max pressure, then pull the fork apart by the lowers and crown until you hear it equalise - it'll make a hissing noise.

All this said, if you bought it second hand and it hasn't had a service yet, get it done. It'll save you a world of pain in the long run. You should be rebuilding that fork every 150 hours to keep it working properly.

Williams will send it to us, or you can bring it directly to us if you find yourself in the Woodstock area.

Thanks for the help so far, sounds like it is not too serious so that is a relieve.

I had it serviced and it was the same afterwards. Only 90mm showing but it does not bottom out, did not bottom out when it was showing 130mm. So I guess I just have less travel.

There is one other guy I trust with shocks so I'll take it to him, if that fails I'll visit you guys at stoke.

NO, DO NOT TAKE IT TO MYLES :P

Depending on the year revelation if it is a solo air, you could take remove the 6mm bolt at the bottom of the air side lower leg. There should be a shraeder valve underneath where you can purge the air in the negative chamber.

Just like a year ago when I was fixing up that GT Ruckus, turns out I was asking the wrong shop to do the work.

Big thanks to Dewald from BMT who replaced the seals on the negative air chamber and the bike rides like a dream now.

No need to send it off to PE

Interesting to note was that when I rode the Elgin 66km on Sunday the shock did not even use all of the 90mm that was available.
