Road rage

The heck? You literally quote the part that implies blame on motorist. To copy what you said, "had to swerve to miss the rider in front of us who overtook the other riders and came in front of us".

1. The riders were in front of the motorist

2. The motorist didn't leave a safe passing distance because "they had to swerve"

3. The motorist was driving recklessly due to the implied passing distance in question.

Do you also blame victims for getting raped? Children being beaten to death because the parents have anger issues? You also blame the cyclists for being in the road when a car plows into a 1 or even a group of 10 of them right, like how dare they legally use the roads?? You totally seem to defend that stereotype. "I'm sorry mister occifer, I killed these people because I was driving too fast with the load I'm pulling and didn't take the necessary precautions because, you know, braking with a trailer slows me down and I'd rather kill someone than slow down"

There's obviously missing facts here, but you need to wake up if you think driving a car in a way that requires sudden swerving when next to unpredictable obstacles is safe practice. I honestly hope you don't have a motorvehicle license because you sound like a danger on the roads and your perception on safe driving is going to be the direct cause of innocent people getting killed.

I think the above is not worthy of a reply.

What happens when a trailer hits a cyclist? The cyclist comes off 2nd best.

What happens with the trailer nearly hits a cyclist? The cyclist gets very angry!

Where did this happen? William Nicol has multiple lanes in each direction, 'till you get way out of town, and then there are no more robots. There should have been plenty of space for a bunch of cyclists with a chase car to be passed by a car with a trailer in the next.

Maybe tomorrow we will hear the other two sides of this story....

Not a lot of space when the cyclist swerves out as mentioned by the op

When i was in AUS June 2019 a driver got a 6 year prison sentence for knocking over a cyclist in the yellow lane with his trailer in perth.  Just saying.  He pleaded that he did not see him, the judge response was why was his trailer over the yellow lane and found him guilty.  He should have known it was wider than the road when he hitched it.

Actually cyclist are not entitled to their own lane and should stay as far left as possible in single file, according to the laws of our roads.

There must be a lot more to this story.
I was nearly hit by a car last week on Main Road in Bryanston (who went through a red traffic light) and believe me, I would've kicked his car to pieces had he stopped at the next red light (which he also jumped).
A cyclist should be entitled to his/her own lane. Who gives a **** if he is 2 abreast. Stay wider of the rider

And not to the left of the yellow line - at least that's how I understand it.

Do you have a source for that? As I understand if there is no bicycle lane on the road, the lane is yours and cars should pass only when safe. This obviously excludes freeways and other roads where bicycles are prohibited.

Now this will piss a lot of people off riding in the middle of the road, so I rather just keep left so cars can pass safely without going into oncoming traffic.

The 1st rule of the road is stay as far left possibly for all vehicles.

Another rules (abandoned in RSA - now "undertaking" is legal) is keep left and pass right - thus when I am on my bicycle overtaking cars I tend to do it in the middle of the road (other lane / oncoming lane) and not up against the pavement.

Finally a 3rd rule of the road is to overtake a vehicle in a separate lane, that ultimately mean in RSA also cyclists (cyclists / bicycles are classified as vehicles). The relative new campaign for overtaking at 1.5m / 1 m is only because motorist have always got away with overtaking cyclist in the same lane which is / was not 100% legal.

THE REGULATIONS

The new provincial regulations require the driver of a vehicle to:

- Exercise due care while passing

the cyclist.

- Leave a distance between the motor vehicle and the cyclist of at least 1m.

- Maintain that distance from the cyclist until safely clear of the cyclist.

- Motorists may cross a solid barrier line to pass a cyclist provided that it can be done without obstructing or endangering other people or vehicles; it is safe to do so; and is done for a period no longer than is necessary to pass the cyclist.

The regulations require a cyclist to:

- Make the appropriate use of cycle lanes where these are available.

- Give conspicuous driving signals as contemplated in national regulations.

- Keep as close as possible to the left edge of the roadway.

- Obey road traffic signs and rules.

- Fit and use effective front and rear lights when riding in the dark and when visibility is limited.

- Not ride on the right-hand side of a motor vehicle proceeding in the same direction, except when passing that vehicle or turning right at an intersection.

- Not ride abreast of another cyclist proceeding in the same direction, except when

passing that cyclist.

- Not ride while wearing a headset, headphones or any listening device other than a hearing aid; or while carrying another person, unless the cycle is specifically equipped to carry more than one person.

THE REGULATIONS

The new provincial regulations require the driver of a vehicle to:

--snip--

Specifically in the Western Cape they have extra rules which include the following:

"

3. (1) A cyclist riding on a public road must— (a) if the road has a pedal cycle lane, ride only in the pedal cycle lane and may not ride on any other portion of a public road except when crossing the road; or (b) if there is no pedal cycle lane, ride— (i) to the left of the left edge of the roadway; or (ii) on the roadway, keeping as close as practicable to the left edge of the roadway

" - https://bicyclesouth.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/SOUTH-AFRICAN-RULES-OF-THE-ROAD.pdf

But also as in that document, there is no such rule in the rest of South Africa, specifically where this occurred.

Only in RSA would one be allowed to break a international fundamental rule of the road at one's discretion. Then they wonder why road accidents in RSA are so high given the average IQ of the population!

Revert to:

But enforce the rule as the original was - overtake in a separate lane non of the 1m BS!!!

True, if they start enforcing all the laws most of us would be in some sort of trouble,

apparently there are cyclists on marine drive to whom these laws do no apply, because they are in the zone, or the bike is for noobs, and whatever **** they can think of to excuse their irresponsibility. oh don't bother bringing up relevant reasons for being on the bike lane temporarily. That's not what is being referred to here.
