Big groups

I have to admit that I also do not like big groups for this reason , if the group more than 20 to 24 then it can be an issue getting past a group.

The group in the video is quite big and as a driver do not know the size as is possible with a truck or car then you might run into the issue they did when overtaking the group.

Really dangerous situation. No oncoming traffic when the vehicle pulled out to overtake but still a very dangerous move.

Maybe what should have happened is that the car should have waited patiently  and made the cyclists aware. Cyclists should then respond by moving into single file and car overtakes safely. This involves patience and cooperation on the road, both commodities in short supply on our roads. As a cyclist and as a motorist I see no thuggish behaviour here. Important to note that no cyclist broke the law in this incident.

Had someone the other night trying to convince me I should be riding group rides. Something like this I see way to often and it puts me off.

Not saying all groups are like this but how do you know until you're in the group.

It's a tricky situation. If the cyclists had gone into single file then the overtaking car would have had an even longer line of cyclists to overtake. And technically the cyclist weren't doing anything wrong either, there was no cycle lane so they are permitted to travel in the lane.

It's a matter of being considerate. In an ideal world the motorist would have waited until there was sufficient space to overtake and at the same time the cyclists could have made some effort to facilitate the motorist overtaking.

I dunno, these are the things that come up when slow soft lumps share the road with fast hard metal boxes

the problem is, how does the motorist make them aware ?

If he hoots he gets aggression from teh cyclists.

His stopping his car in the road indicated agression from his side, I did not watch till the end so dont know what happened further on.

To me what should have happened there , the group should know, even though they are not breaking any laws they are taking up a large amount of road space, they are also vulnerable, as courtesy the guys at the back should have started alerting the guys further forward and everyone should have moved over.

Its not about who is right, its about courtesy.

Or the person in the 1.5 ton metal box could have been patient and waited?

True - even as I typed that I thought "Yeah sure that's going to happen".

In the groups I ride in someone at the back shouts out "car" and we all move over - admittedly not in a peloton of this size though.

How? If the motorist hooted the cyclists probably would have beaten the driver up. They didn't look like a nice bunch of people to me!!

Agreed, the car behaves badly

Wait, so the car passes when its not safe to do so, then once passes stops and blocks the road way? Ok.

I'm not a fan of the car driving person in this Video, they could have done better in many aspects.

A person riding their bicycle alone is very vulnerable: from 1.5ton moving pieces of metal and from foot soldiers who like to prey on people who are alone.

So people who ride their bicycles in groups make allot of sense, safety in numbers.

This road is very unsafe for overtaking.

Would the person driving the car have made the same overtaking attempt had it been an 18 wheeler truck moving at the same speed? That would have also ended in an unsafe scenario, no?

If all of these people on their bikes were riding single file, the queue would have been 3 times as long as the one shown in the video and there would definitely not have been enough space for:

1 person-on-their-bicycle + overtaking-car + car-coming-from-the-front and the required 1.5m clearance to ensure the person on the bicycle is safe.

That's a real good point. I think you should post that under the video on youtube

Exactly, if it was a slow moving truck, you dont over take, go onto curb and then park in front of said truck.

Driver behaves like a complete prat... I think they cyclists are actually pretty well behaved considering her brain fart to park in front of them forcing them onto pavements and into the opposing lane.

That said, that bunch is too big imho... it will always simply take way too long to overtake them, inevitably creating problems and tensions. Also, it's hard to gauge the size of the bunch until it's too late. Mention was made of a 18 wheeler... well, that's 30 odd meters long, this group are spread over easily 150 meters plus.

I'm sure someone smarter than me could work out the optimum bunch size limit etc... considering speed differentials, ideal average overtaking time etc

Let's do everything possible from our side, as we're always going to end up pulling the short straw in these situations

Car drivers is dumb for stopping in the road after passing BUT

Cyclist are to blame as well. How can you go for a group ride as one giant Pelton

Maybe should have split into groups of 10-15 or 15-20 and then left at intervals of 5mins. With faster rider/groups going first

Ja a group that size just makes things really dangerous.

All involved could have done better perhaps.
