An example would be the Powerdot device

I’m interested in trying the powerdot as a means of treating and relieving lower back / hip pain I get from cycling.

Does anyone have one of these EMS devices and find it beneficial or just another snake skin oil scam?

Please share your experience.

I’ve had various bike fits and there is nothing wrong with my bike set up or my core strength, it’s an issue I have always had and general medical opinion is that’s its a result of a slightly twisted pelvis and SIJ.

Thanks

They do work for some people - quite a disturbing feeling when you use them.

Ask your physio to recommend a brand

My physio treated me with EMS to the back of my neck muscles after a car accident. While it was working and for a few hours after, the pain and tension was relieved (in addition to hands-on physiotherapy and stretching), but it never lasted. I'd suggest you try it for yourself and see what you think of it.

Did not think of speaking to the physio...although have not been there for a few years now... touch wood.

On a whim last night I ordered the powerdot based on recommendation from another cyclist.

I have a cheapy, which I bought about 4 years ago on eBay, about $25.

Even if it's just the PLACEBO effect, I think it works and have used it on neck, knees, arthritic thumb, back.

I'm not sure the Powerdot is worth the money though.

Personally, I like EMS devices and think they are quite useful.

Even more so if you know how to use it right!!

You can either just stick them on your body and sit in front of the TV and let a program run OR you can learn how to engage specific muscles and running programmes to specifically target muscles.

What I like about Powerdot specifically is that it is virtually a wireless product.

I've used an entry level Compex with wires running all over the show, getting tangled up and making it very hard to move.

Compex wireless models are incredibly expensive, looking at R10k+ whereas you can get a Powerdot for about half that price.

New Powerdot software upgrades are also going to be bringing in some TENS programs.

There was a lot of exposure at the 2019 TdF with Lance Armstrong's Podcast and a few cyclists seen using it.

One or two reads:

One teething issue I have heard is that, because the device functions from an App on your phone and connects via Bluetooth, that it struggles to connect to the pods if you are connected to a lot of Bluetooth devices.

You will then have to unpair your other devices first in order to connect the pods.

I have a Compex SP4 (the wired one). I've also used the SP8 (with the pods) which is a nice to have but prohibitively expensive for at home use.

It's absolutely worth the investment in the device.  I don't get tangled in the cables, I've just figured out how to set it up neatly. It helps me enormously with my daily training recovery. Used it  successfully for my husband with lower back pain and neck pain (he is on his feet all day and works with his hands, standing at odd angles). It's a great tool to use as part of your warm-up before an event for muscle activation, and to target areas with imbalances. Yes, it's pricey but it pays for itself over and over.

I have the complex Sport. It’ll had it since 2003. I’ve found the active recovery program to be very useful over the years especially during stage races. It’s well supported by hitec therapy in montague gardens. There are now smaller more powerful units available but I’ll buy one again

I have the powerdot, been using it for over a year now. Absolutely love it, great for aches & pains. I typically use the massage function - all it does is to help blood circulation to the affected areas and that in turn helps with recovery.

Drawback is I did not buy the DUO and also the pads can get expensive ( i always try buy/order these overseas as the local agents are expensive).

I have the powerdot and have serious back issues.  Brings me tremendous relief but not everything works for everyone.  The pads are available locally at a reasonable price if you shop around.

Top tip is to use it after a shower.  My pads last almost double recommended time as I only use them when clean.

I love mine

Yes I have heard that there is a shortage of pads here in Europe as well

Great tip thanks

Yip, agreed. The pads can be rather expensive, although Generation 2 is significantly cheaper than Generation 1.

Oily skin is a recipe for an expensive exercise.

A bit of Isopropyl Alcohol on cotton wool to clean the skin also does wonders to make the pads last longer.

Finally it was delivered yesterday.

Initial feelings are it definitely helps relieve my lower back hip pain. Tried the recovery function on my legs after a stiff hilly run this morning, let’s see how the legs feel on tomorrow’s hill TT
