Slowbee Posted July 8, 2008 Share Sean, what are the rules regarding body/bike contact in a race?
Sean Badenhorst Posted July 8, 2008 Share Not sure of the precise rules Slowbee, but body contact is common in sprints in road races. As long as a rider keeps his hands on the bars and his feet in the pedals, body contact is pretty acceptable (expected even) in tight situations. The key really is whether or not a the front rider in a sprint (in this case Sauser) moved off his line deliberately or not. Sauser had the lead and he held his sprinting line. It seems like Paulissen's body contact is what led to the crash. I feel sorry for Sauser.
MintSauce Posted July 8, 2008 Share I'm no expert, but I agree that Sauser is innocent. I watched that clip about 20 times to see where he might've done something wrong. Interesting to note that Sauser wasn't on the podium for the champagne celebrations. What I want to know is, did the official have video footage available to him before making the decision...? MintSauce Posted July 8, 2008 Share Also....can the decision be overturned afterwards...?
Duathlete Posted July 8, 2008 Share Sauser was robbed of the rainbow jersey!!!
NotSoBigBen Posted July 8, 2008 Share Hey Mints, me and Lil' Ben debated that but were of the opinion that the result once given was final unless there is an option at some kind of CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport or something like that) ...... Sean Badenhorst Posted July 8, 2008 Share On Sauser's website www.sauserwind.com there is mention of an appeal having been lodged. If they can change a race result due to a positive doping test days later, I don't see why they can't do the same for a result dispute. It is the 21st Century and we do have technology to help with, er, frame-by-frame replays...
SwissVan Posted July 8, 2008 Share ....Interesting to note that Sauser wasn't on the podium for the champagne celebrations.... The locals crowd were giving Sauser a hard time (boo'ing him apparently) so he left the podium asap. Seems like there were more Belguims than Swiss in the crowd.Check out www.sauserwind.com There is some other video footage after the finish Sauser has appealed to the UCI and in all honesty I dont see how they can turn down his appeal, BUT then again it is the UCI and nothing is impossible...... rock Posted July 8, 2008 Share at the end of the day Sauser will still be wearing the rainbow stripes at 95% of all his races - how often did he get the chance to race a marathon in the world champs jersey.......
MTB Kid Posted July 8, 2008 Share Won't both these guys be competing in the Olympics? Should make for some great racing
#Pete# Posted July 8, 2008 Share The rules say that "Obstruction in the final sprint" may result in relegation or disqualification. Clearly Sauser was in front, and Paulissen rode into him when he saw the barrier ahead obstructing his side. It does not look to me like Sauser moved from his line at all, he just held it. Paulissen didn't (and couldn't without running the risk of hitting the barrier up ahead). I can't see why Sauser would have to have moved inwards to leave space for Paulissen because the barrier wasn't straight; the barrier was obstructing Paulissen, not Sauser. Furthermore, it does not look like Paulissen would have won the sprint if they didn't collide - he wasn't making much progress. Sauser has thirty days to lodge a written appeal to an appeal board. IMO he should win his appeal.
Velouria Posted July 8, 2008 Share From http://www.mtb-live.com Christoph Sauser appeals to the UCI's decision http://www.mtb-live.com/EN/templates/rt_terrantribune/images/pdf_button.png http://www.mtb-live.com/EN/templates/rt_terrantribune/images/printButton.png http://www.mtb-live.com/EN/templates/rt_terrantribune/images/emailButton.png Written by svaya Monday, 07 July 2008 Inthe aftermath of the world championship mountain bike marathonChristoph Sauser together with his team, Specialized Factory Racing, and the Swiss cycling federation have submitted a written appeal to theUCI concerning the decision of the UCI commissaire during thischampionship that sent Sauser back to the second position. Whilewaiting for a reaction Sauser, his team and the Swiss federation havedecided not to comment any further about this subject... http://www.mtb-live.com/NL/images/stories/sauser_offenburg_sm.jpg Ina long press release the three above mentioned parties declared thatSauser as Paulissen were an even match that day. When Sauser after thecrash, about 70 meter in front of the finish line, finished first.Later he did recieve the news that he was sanctioned and brought backto a second position, a fact which is hard to bare for Sauser, his teamand the Swiss cycling federation. According to them the recordedfootage shows that there was no reason at all to put Sauser to thesecond position. In reaction, they have submitted a written appeal tothe UCI and it will be waiting for everybody to see what the UCI willdeclare... Als voetnoot inhet pAs a foonote in the press release all writers of this text wantedto clear out the situation once the two racers: "At first Roel reactednegatively towards us, but later said that this was not right which weaccepted. Roel is a very sound individual and a rider we all respect -it was all in the heat of the moment. However, as a result, and knowing that it was Roel's local area, the crowds boo'edChristoph. This was very hurtful situation to both Christoph and us,his team. As a mark of sportsmanship Christoph attended the podium, butfollowing boo'ing from the crowd left the podium upon champagne celebrations.Sauser is a great champion, a great ambasssador for this sport and didnot deserve this reaction from people who did not see what happened." Slowbee Posted July 8, 2008 Share umm ok time to explain. Who is the rider with #1 on his bike ? cause in the clip he is in the lead when they crash .... and he crosses the line first.
Sean Badenhorst Posted July 8, 2008 Share Slowbee, that's Sauser. He rode with No. 1 cos he won the marathon world champs in 2007. He should also ride with No.1 again next year after his appeal has been considered... Sauser is a brilliant mountain bike racer and could even become one of the greatest ever (some reckon he already is) as he is still relatively young. He's also the current XC world champ and at this stage, looks like the favourite to grab gold at the Olympics...
Slowbee Posted July 8, 2008 Share Sean, let me understand this, the guy with number one (sauser) on his bike did not win ?
