I was under the impression that none of our DH venues were able to allow or accommodate enough practice runs or had enough 'dead space' to accommodate the pit crews, media and spectator access/egress?

I was also under the impression that the Stellenbosch XCO won by Sam Gaze would essentially not be considered again as the travel/logistics was difficult to work into the schedule (Not sure how it differs from Brazil tbh) and the general consensus was that SA would not be considered as a UCI venue going forward.

This is all from memory around various discussions at various times.

A run down Platteklip (and work some contour path into it) could (with the help of a trail crew and a load of money) be an epic DH run.

Yes yes I know no ski-lifts or any heli-evacs etc ...

I think it was more to do with Grandstand Management opting out of their 3 year contract to host the event from 2018 through 2020. They only hosted 2018 then made up some story of coming back bigger and better in 2020 but never did and covid was definitely not the excuse. Once they opted out they would be at the back of the cycle of fly away event venues to be considered again. I doubt we’ll be on the calendar again for at least the next 10yrs

Yes!

I remember local infrastructure also being an issue. That was silly and also just shows how preferred suppliers and organisations influence things.

A company like GL Events (not a UCI preferred supplier) who has been responsible for most major sporting events globally could come on board. They have a local SA office, are a French company based in Lyon and own Slick seating based in Birmingham. Been part of the TDF for 20 odd years.

Having built numerous Olympic venues, the Canterbury Crusaders home ground, Rugby/Cricket/soccer world cups, formula 1's, tennis tournaments etc globally over the last 15 years and even longer in Europe, they are more than capable and would likely have jumped at the chance BUT not preferred supplier so meh

Anyway, as you say, I doubt SA will be on any XCO/DH roster for a while. We still have Darkfest though. That's pretty rad

Would love to go and watch in Albstadt but the chances that they will allow any spectators is probably too much of a gamble...
