Locking of bicycle - recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I need to lock my bike up when I go shopping.

I don't think a D lock will work because the bike can be uplifted into a vehicle in the parking lot.

What are the recommendations with regard to cable/chain around wheels and locking to a shopping trolley rack for example?

I have searched the hell out of the forums but there does not seem to be a definitive answer. Is there anything new on the market, insurance requirements, where to purchase?

Advice appreciated.

I don't think any lock will be 100% tamper proof.

I have one of those really thick cable locks. It is as tough as nails. Unless the thief has a good cable cutter, it won't be broken that easily.

I normally wrap it around a tall pole or something and try to leave my bike in a spot where there are lots of ppl. Hopefully someone will spot any would be thief trying to tamper with it.

The best protection against theft is insurance. I am sure you will be safe with them if you can prove it was locked when they stole it

An inexpensive 4 digit thick cable lock around seat post and rear wheel onto a trolley works for me, been doing that for years.  It helps that management at the supermarket and liquor store and pharmacy welcomed me doing that inside their stores right next to the helpful security officers.

A D-lock to a  high traffic area pole, should work, most all poles have either a sign bolted to them, or a light, or both, so that secures the bike from being lifted UP the pole…

in the motorbike world, we sell ‘Screamer’ disk locks if the bike is even touched - though they do give a loud warning before going full decibel assault mode…

I reckon good high-viz area and sturdy bicycle lock, to said pole, on insured bike - the rest is truly up to fate,no.

good luck, fantastic that you are shopping ‘from’ a bike - merit-worthy in these car- culture days!

I remember as a kid it never being an issue to park my bike right inside the front door of most shops. I never had a lock. At uni i learned that you can lock your bike as securely as you want but you better be sure everything on it is bolted on and preferably using hex bolts lol. People will steal saddles, wheels, brakes…anything given enough time and leave you whatever is locked to the rack or pole haha
