Has anyone other than myself had a look at this OP's profile?

  • He's been part of the Hub since 2014
  • Back in 2014 he wanted to buy his very first bike
  • Now FF to 2022 and he has another: Another first bike question - how do we feel about Silverback?

I now have a couple of glaring questions:

  1. Has the OP purchased a bike back in 2014?
  2. Is the OP just posting a question, replying once or twice and then disappears for a few years only to return to the forum to ask the same question with a slight twist, "Groundhog Day" much? (It is a movie for the younger readers 😄).

I really struggle to provide my opinion on a bike based on what I am seeing above

Please ready your popcorn as it is Fri-yay after all

Something "off" with some of the Hub stats ....

Last week a person made a 1st post, but he has been a member since 1970 !!!!  Yea right ...

I actually did buy that back back in 2014. I wasn't ready for cycling back then, and sold the bike again within a few months.

Fast forward to today, and I'm in a different place. I've moved to a beautiful part of the country, and I started cycling a short while ago on my brother-in-law's bike. I absolutely love it, and have landed in the situation where I need to buy my own.

So yeah - totally legit. I wasn't ready then, but I am now. Hahaha.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for all the advice everyone. You guys have given me SO much to think about, and I'll definitely update this post once I've got a bike.

At this point, I'm either going with the Titan Rogue Dash if I buy new, or I'm going to try to score a deal on a second hand bike.

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate it!

I bought a Norco storm 1in XL  in February from East City Cycles in cape Town for a little under 17grand and am very happy with it. First bicycle in a bit over 20 years. It comes with a dropper post, deore 1x11 groupset, hydraulic tektro disc brakes the fork is ok for my needs but some people might be unhappy with it as it's a suntour xcm coil fork but since I mostly ride on the road with it locked out trying to build up fitness it's done around 400km's so far and all good I have changed the pedals for clipless pedals and the grips for spongier ones, also got my butt bones measured and got a saddle that fits my wide load better. One day if I lose enough weight and start doing more than flattish jeep track and tar I'll probably swap out the fork for an air option.

Hey guys!

I need to buy my first MTB. Budget is 16/17k if I can finance through a place like cycle lab.

What SEEMS to be a good bike at that price point is the 2022 Silverback Stride Expert, but I'd love some thoughts about this from you guys.

My needs - definitely a MTB, but no crazy DH stuff. This bike will be for trails and things though, so the front fork needs to not be a POS apparently.

Would the silverback be a good start? Should I consider something from Titan Racing Maybe?

If you are buying your first mountain bike, then you really do not have a clear idea of what you will or will not like.

May I suggest you buy a slightly cheaper second hand bike, or even a nicer second hand bike in the same price point, ride this and learn more about what sort of a rider you are/will be.

Then sell the second hand bike and hopefully only loose a couple of rands and then buy the bike that would best suit your needs.

A new bike purchase would mean a lesser spec for the same amount of money being spent on a second hand bike, and the moment you walk off the dealers floor you loose a good bit of value.
