Winter riding jacket options

Hello fellow Hubbers

I am in the market for a Cycling jacket to keep me warm and dry. At the moment I wear a gillet and arm warmers when it is cold. It works well in most situations but when it is very cold or raining it doesn't help. It can be very windy and cold in my area during the winter. Some of the races that I like to do can also be wet and cold. (Karoo2Coast, Transbaviaans, Swartberg races)

What do you use and what will work best for me? Looking forward to hear from you.

In Google, type winter jacket bikehub, then click search. You will get a number of brands being reviewed, discussed as well as some for sale links.

Once you have narrowed your search down to a few options, ask for opinions.

Does anyone here ever ride in a fully waterproof riding jacket? I would imagine you are soon as wet as you would be if it wasn't waterproof just from the sweat?

Your timing might be pretty good to take advantage of Euro winter sales. Go look at CRC/ bike24 they normally have pretty good deals on old stock going into their summer.

You're supposed to be paying ~40% import duties on this, (which will happen if you ship). but if you can get a mule to bring it over then happy days.

This is not SARS/import legal, but that is up to you to deal with.

Kamikazi makes pretty decent riding shirts. we had some TEA shirts made and they're very comfortable in winter and summer.

Could also just be me enjoying winter rides more than summer, not bothered by the rain.

I recently pulled the trigger on some Vye stuff, as I only had one long sleeve cycling jacket and needed more :

- Thermo range is warm, not a lot of stock left though (not surprising at this price..) :

- Gilet :

It's amazing value if you ask me, for the price of one Ciovita waterproof jacket I got 1 gilet, 1 jacket and one jersey, was pretty happy, can't believe they're not sold out yet.

I also have these :

Bit of a fail, I end up not wearing it most days when the rain surprises me, and when I do have it with me when it rains I just don't like so much the feel of the sleeves on my sweaty arms, so end up just riding with the "gilet" part. Also the fact that it's not supposed to be washed in the washing machine makes it a bit of a pain

I like this one, I would pick that one over the long sleeves one any day. easier when you can chose which layer to keep on and which to take off.

Not if it's designed for cycling - We bought some orange rain jackets from Decathlon for TB, designed specifically for cycling with vents, they worked really well and cost about 700 ronds

They are almost too warm for todays condition. I tend to wear them only on reco rides, and even then I end up sweating a bit. But I think I'll love them once it gets cooler 😅

Gore's magical shakedry fabric was supposed to be amazing.
I think it was made from Unicorn and Mermaid hair. But alas, its no longer.

I hesitated in ordering an Idro 3 jacket when they were 200 Quid on Merlin, but they are all gone now.

Depending on the temperature I tend to just wear a long sleeved top  - either trail running or bike specific as well as a tailored wind breaker as a shell. As long as you're generating heat while riding this keeps you protected from excessive wind chill even though you're wet.
