Enduro Wax – My Long-Term Test

I’ve been testing our product Enduro Wax, a locally made hot-dip chain wax from Cape Town, since 2 August 2023 on my Specialized MTB.

To date (17 June 2025), I’ve clocked up 29033 km with 316226 m of climbing, including events like the 2023 Munga, through all conditions—dust, mud, rain, and temps up to 45°C.

From the start, I used two chains, rotating every ~450 km, and here’s the key point:
I’m still running the original drivetrain—same two chains, cassette, and chainrings—with zero replacements.

The drivetrain is still running smoothly and quietly, with no shifting issues.

  • Dry rides: up to 500 km per wax.
  • Wet/muddy rides: Performance is still far ahead of drip lubes, but reapplication intervals depend on how gritty or contaminated the water is—the dirtier it gets, the sooner you’ll need to re-wax.
  • Cleanup is minimal—dirt doesn’t stick.

I’m on track to reach 30,000 km on the full original setup, and I’ll keep you posted on how far it goes before any signs of failure appear.

More and more riders are switching to Enduro Wax and giving us great feedback

Happy to answer any questions if you're considering switching to hot-dip waxing.

What do you use to maintain lubrication on long rides like Munga or if the wax washes off in wet weather?

Posted (edited)

Hi Werner, when I rode the Munga in 2023, I considered carrying a second pre-waxed chain, which would’ve easily lasted to the finish. But instead, I made a wax-based drip lube with WS₂, which worked pretty well—I got over 600km before needing to reapply.

The reality with hot-dip wax on multi-day rides like the Munga is that you’ll eventually need to use a drip lube. The downside is that once you do, you’ll need to do a full degrease before re-waxing.

One option is to carry a second waxed chain. Another is to bring a small pot of wax and re-dip mid-race: remove the chain, rinse it in clean water, dry it, and dip it in the hot wax. It sounds like a mission, but if you know the process, it can be done in under 20 minutes. We are working on a solution to make it a lot easier to apply wax on those very long rides. "I'm running a SRAM GX Eagle XG-1275 drivetrain. Since the start, I've been alternating between two chains: a GX Eagle 12-speed and an X01 Eagle chain."

Hi Dexter, Whereabouts are you situated? And I will get back to you.

Hi

I will reach out to you, looks like you are close to me, I have been using molten speed wax - but find the chain gets noisy quite early - I have therefore reduced the km's per waxing - not ideal.

I've been running the Enduro wax on my gravel bike for about 12 000 km, one new chain and one partially worn one that was on the bike when I got it. The partially worn one was at about 0.3% when I got it, and 6 000km later binned it at 0,4%.

The new one is also at around 6 000km and shows zero elongation so far.

Mixed conditions, reapplying usually between 300 and 400km (as soon as it starts to get noisy), and just a boiling water rinse and dry before reapplication. The longest interval I managed was around 600km, and the shortest was around 250km of wet and muddy riding.

The initial clean is a bit of a faff, but other than that it just takes a bit of planning to make sure there's always a prepped chain waiting during big training blocks so there's no downtime.

How’s the noise Andrew?

A bit noisy for the first few km while it's running in, but not much louder than a drip lube after that. Certainly nothing that annoys me, and I'm very much a "a quiet bike is a happy bike" sort.

If you use a drip lube that doesn’t have oil in it like Silca super secret or UFO drip then you don’t need to strip and clean the chain again before doing another hot wax.

Been hot waxing for a few years now. I do about 4-6 chains at a time. Since we have four bikes and 2 chains per bike. The only thing to be wary of is quick links, since those are supposed to be one time use only. If they aren’t “clicking” together or have zero resistance when reconnecting the chain then I replace them.

I have used both for ages...can't really tell much difference..I have X01 Eagle cassettes with over 14k on them and rotate and clean chains every 1500km...

On very dusty rides the Squirt ebike lube lasts longer than Smoove.

Probably just anecdotal .... but if it works it works 👍
