Bombing down the singletrack at Karkloof. Front wheel tracks off the narrow track, I'm riding on a borrowed bike and the brakes are mixed up (MX style) I think my instinct went for grabbing a hand full of "Rear" but ended up grabbing  handful of front. needless to say it ended up with me doing a superman OTB landing on my right shoulder.

Dislocated the shoulder, I was certain I had a broken collarbone but only severed the ligaments on my clavicle. At the time, me laying in the brambles hurt more than anything else.

Got on the bike and rode the 5-odd kms to the car while still full of adrenaline. The car ride back to hilton was painful. Took a shower before going to casualties.

No surgery at that stage as the specialist is recovering from carpel tunnel correction on both his wrists.

I have been referred to a specialist in Pta, which I will see shortly. In the meantime, it looks like I have half a golfball under my skin on my shoulder...

Cant access the CT and MRI, as they are on cd's and who still rocks a cd drive in 2025?

I have the same, they tried to mend it with some wire but that broke again, so I am just walking around with a bump on my right shoulder.

Tore the ligaments on the SC joint. Nothing anyone can really do, without a very risky procedure. Not worth it. Only remedy is actually doing weights in the gym to strengthen the support muscles.

Cannot bowl a cricket ball, sleep on my right shoulder or swim, then the clavicle pops out at the breastbone and muscles start spasming up. Not nice, but hey there are people stuck in warzones, so who am I to complain about a few muscle spasms and bad sleep.

At least I can still ride a bike 😁, as long as I don't fall on the right shoulder.

Well, all the best with your recovery, it is not easy or quick, not a nice way to start the year.

There is a procedure called the Neoligament double loop, CC and ACJ recon.

Apparently, very successful for this type of injury.

How has your range of motion been otherwise? Affecting anything like lifting stuff up, other sports like rackets or golf ?

The ortho at Durbanville told me back in 2016 that mtbers keep him in practice. During one of my visits I shared the waiting room with 3 fellow riders. We shared war stories.

In 2021 at my visit to Netcare Blaauwberg I was reliably informed the X-ray machine was named "The Hoogekraal".

t may have been hyperbole but if you ride a bike, chances are you're going to be told, "Surgery then 6 to 8 weeks and do your physio exercises".

My ankle surgeon told me physio was a waste of money in 2021 when I broke my ankle in three places. I went once, got the exercises and then I just did them regularly until my foot was better. Once I started riding again, and more specifically hike-a-biking like up the Conties mast, was when my foot rapidly improved.

There is no way that physio is a waste of money for me- every injury I've ever had has been improved and my recovery expedited and made complete by the treatments and explanations of the biomechanics behind my body's adaptation and compensation to injury. My reflex when a professional tells me that another professional's interventions are a waste of money is distrust.

snapped the fork on my bike

Well that’s unlocked a whole new world of possibilities in my mind 😱

This was 100% user error on my behalf. Rode a very cost effective rigid fork way beyond it’s capabilities. It was fine, until it wasn't.

Destroying my left shoulder now and having previously dislocated my right one twice…i can confirm this lol. You fall, it hurts, your arm doesn't quite work…but ‘it’s fine’. You find something to hook your thumb into and keep it in place. Here camelbacks and helmet straps help. Put it in a position you can maintain…because you wont be moving it again very shortly.

As you start walking or riding back on eggs ——slowly——the shivers start as the adrenaline tapers off and the swelling (and pain) increases.

Its about here i where turn into the 👹 emoji. The worst part is, your S.O is still on her way (laughing at you) and there are all those speedbumps, stops, potholes, traffic circles between you and the ER yet to come haha.
I dont know how some guys just pop shoulders back trailside. I kind of wish i broke the right one as it has been coming out easier and easier. At least this way all the surgery could fix the wonky one. Now i have a bionically enhanced one and a wonky one.

PPS: just remembered, thanks Pierre who spotted me from a distance walking back to dairy shed and noticed i wasn't right. Pierre pushed my bike back for me and purposefully asked me as many questions as he could to distract me from the pain. Then helped the wife mount bike to rack once she got there.
thanks bud! Owe you a beer.

Really seems that some of these docs bolt/screw you back together like a weekend DIY’er would a rotten, wobbly piece of garden furniture with an overpowered cordless drill….”43 screws at many angles should do?” 😅. Maybe  ‘houtwerk’ should also be a mandatory subject for medical students☺️

go watch ortho surgery videos. It is  not far off...

The first few times it takes a lot of force and a lot of pain to get it back in. The more you do it the easier it gets to put back in yourself. Which is good because after a few too many dislocations it doesn't take much to get it to pop out.

My first dislocation happened in covid times and i was not allowed to go do a mri or see a physio - you know….non critical injuries and all that. I was also handed a inkjet printed copy /manual of shoulder rehab exercises to do at home by the ortho. I worked through it all and built up to the more advanced movements in about 4 weeks and it all turned out fine. I think if you are committed and have the right info to reference, a physio is not 100% needed. It depends on the injury obviously too.

Even after the second time on my right shoulder they cant ‘manoeuvre’ it in manually in E.R. They usually want to try and cant then manage..then go Xray to see why, ten put me under and i guess probably moer it in with a mallet or something😂🤷🏻‍♂️
