If you are choosing between those, and 2 pot, the Formula Curas are monster stoppers in my experience. I use the non X version 2-pots on a 17kg enduro bike and they rival many 4-pot brakes ito stopping power and modulation. I like them so much i have 2 sets on different bikes. The X version just cuts weight but is the same epic system. Extra bonus is all the spares/parts are available locally - more than you can say for shimano or even sram in some instances.

i like shimano brakes…but nothing more expensive than SLX -  so you don't cry when you have to throw them away when they break because you cant find parts.

if you are shopping in XTR territory, don't forget about Hope’s. (XCR X2 etc) Fully rebuildable locally too. Nice bling too.

You can also use Shimano levers with the Magura calipers.

Otherwise Merlin Cycles have XT two pots on sale at the moment for a steal

Shhhhh. Stop advertising one of the last treasures out there😅

Cura X all the way, super happy with mine, the stopping power is nuts. In my case I found them a bit too hardcore, so calmed them down a bit with Shimano rotors. XTR are great if you are less than 85kg, don’t understand why there is such a difference between XT vs XTR in terms of stopping power. The Cura X are super bling! Titanium fitting and Kevlar hoses for the win! But you knew that already I’m sure…

I would definitely do the Shigura conversion if I was in your shoes...

Slight deviation from OP, but does anyone know of an integrated tier list of MTB brakes? I currently run Sram Level 180/160 and I know this is a bottom half set, but I am not sure how it compares to other Sram models or Shimano Deore/XT, not to mention the multiple options outside the Shimano/Sram stable.

My next upgrade is probably brakes but I have no idea what to aim at. Currently I'm considering XT just because (almost) everything else on the bike is XT.

Im very happy with my Formula Curas. Got 4pots, since 2 pots were out of stock at the time I bought. Never missed a beat in the past year.

They replaced SRAM level TL that came with the bike...would never recommend Sram to anyone after my experience with those. If someone wants a pair of levels for cheap, let me know 😃

I personally love my Magura MT4 - I think they’re an older version but the stoppage is on point and I’ve not had to do any adjustments or work on them since I bought the bike in 2023.

My bike is pretty light (Giant XTC carbon) and I weigh *cough* 80ish. I do mostly red route type stuff with the occasional route oopsie when I end up on black and I’m neither fast nor slow 😊

Personally I absolutely love my Magura.  Have been riding the MT8 on previous bike for about 4 years and the current bike I have the MT7 on with no issues going for a year.

Also think in terms of maintenance. Shimano brakes are super easy to bleed, same with the Formula Cura brakes, SRAM less so.

Shimano brake pads you can find everywhere and SRAM as well.

However I have been struggling to find brake pads for my Cura 4's and they seem to be very expensive. I can't find a set for under R500 locally. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place. My 2c worth.

That being said I absolutely love the Cura's.

I'm looking at this for some old brakes I have lying around .... as a matter of interest anyone know what fluid would be best/ok to use?

OK no worries, question answered on the Shigura thread 😎
