Hi guys. It’s time for me to buy new pedals for my mtb, but I’m a little on the fence between which brand is a better option. I only have experience with Shimano SPD (non XT/XTR) pedals and would love some suggestions from someone that have experienced both brands.

I had the Shimano SPD pedals when I first starting riding. After a year the pedals developed play and needed a service which was almost the same price as a new set. Decided to spend the extra bucks and get a set of Look X track pedals and never looked back. I am on my 2nd set and not a single issue yet

I don't think you can go wrong with any of Shimano XT/XTR or Look X Tracks. I have most recently been using X Track carbons, which replaced a set of XTRs. Both are very durable. The X Tracks have taken multiple rock strikes without any issue. If I was making a decision I would go purely on price. I would go with X Track Race (the non-carbon version) based on value for money.

Ive had bad experience with Look pedals adjustment screw stripping and you cant replace them. I wont consider them ever again.

I would only ride Shimano if you want to stick with SPD's. XT or 540's. I wouldnt go a level lower than that.

If you want proper easy service then the XT / SLX level are better cos you don't need the special plastic tool to take the axle out - they've just got a standard hex on the axle sleeve.

Looks any day. They don’t squeak and creak, have a noticeably larger platform and if looked after last as long as the Shimanos. You can also buy replacement parts. They are more expensive though. The squeaking issue alone was too much for me with a recent set of Shimano XTs. Nothing solved it except going back to Looks.

I removed it with a set of circlip pliers. The plastic tool strips too easily.

I've been using the same Shimano plastic tool for 13 years, still going strong... and it's in daily use in a shop.

Still a silly system  IMO, but I guess the plastic sleeve on the entry level pedals is cheaper to make and a hex made of plastic is not long for this world.

I have lost one of those teeny tiny Shimano bearings while doing a service. No amount of combing the garage floor with a magnet worked. Trail and tar kindly gave me a dead pedal to use as a donor.

Look has changed hands several times in the past 5 years. I would be careful with this choice because of this as spares could be a problem if this trend continues.

I have Shimano XTR M960 pedals that are 20 years old. As Droo said they outlive cockroaches in the apolocalypse

No need to take the whole assembly apart, so no danger of dropping anything...

I have experience with the LOOK, I have both the standard version and the Carbon Ti which is crazy light. You also get a larger area which translates to better comfort in those longs rides. They’ve been flawless, only con is the end cap requires a special tool but overall hands down better than Shitmano.
