@ChrisFThanks for promoting our region and local race!

The region had lots of rain, was not the best table grape and raisin season and the citrus look peculiar with expected increase in shipping.

However, the great Orange river is full, flowing fast, the veld and animals look great, meat aplenty! and we are entering out two most beautiful months of the year, April and May.

It is now the time to start that training and come and enjoy the Northern Cape.

I was most fortunate to have projects on farms and solar sites from Keimoes to Springbok.

The people ...

The tarrain ....

The VIEWS ....

Very few get to experience the raw nature deep into these farms.

Trans Augrabies is one of the only events where we get to experience this, AND .have the safety of a race (staff, medics, etc).

For each and every nature lover ... this needs to be high on the bucket list.

Costs .... we opted for a river view challet (mid price, though camping is much cheaper) + fuel from the Cape + entry .... still cheaper than a W2W entry.  Sure, it aint cheap, but certainly affordable when looking at other stage races.

And how many of those cater for the mountain biker, the gravel and the trail runner in the family ... all at the same venue.  Heck, I opted for one long MTB day, then a 19km trail run the next day.

Where should one look for accommodation if the lodge is full?

As of yesterday there is still ample open challets at Augrabies.

Pretty sure some of the spots outside the park will be a bit cheaper.

Lots of guest houses just outside the park.  Look between Dundi (local landing strip) to Marchant

Now those were nice business trips ...

This is a fantastic event, did it last year, impeccably organised, amazing food, great routes to choose from. Comprehensive info on the website.

2 days riding, not flat as you would maybe expect in that part of the world. Incredible vistas, and scenery. Some technical riding, some sand, some 4x4tracks, some district road.

Can easily rival the big multi day events IMHO.

A must do.

We did 2022 and 2023.

Happy to be going again this year.

Accommodation options:

Kameeldoring Camping site - Ideal if you like to camp or comfortable with a tented chalet, 3km from the start of Trans-Augrabies. Option to rent a Bush-Lapa in Upington from Oryx Outdoors.

Home | Kameeldoring Camping

The Falls Guesthouse - Ideal if you looking for b&b, 5 km from the stat of Trans-Augrabies.

The Falls Guesthouse

Lake Grappa - Ideal if you looking for self-service or two bedrooms and away from the race, it is about 15km from the start. Personally I would not cycle to the start just due to the early morning temperature.

Disclaimer, I`ve stayed at all three enjoyed our stays, some were for business and others for family weekends. And yes they are all three clients of mine but I paid my own way.

Other options:

Augrabies Lodge, 7km from the start, normally my lunch stop.

De Oude Stoor, 7km from the start.

HOME - De Oude Stoor

About the event, was born between friends after the Trans-Portugal race they did together. It is now run by the Strauss family, a family affair with everyone doing their part. It was in the first years a point to point race, I did like that format just because it show cased our region. The race is now in Augrabies and surrounds. It is not a high numbers race, just due to the remoteness, date in the year calendar and the nature of the trails, you are not going to find manicured trails.

It is a must to take the meals package and take some time to frequent the hospitality tent, some local endurance legends (Kapnoudhis, F Strauss, Killian, van der Merwe) that will ensure you have a good time!

While you are here, please explore our region.

It is not fishing season, but perhaps you can take a chance at catching klein-bek geelvis or at least a catfish. Kalahari Adventures

Some semi-precious stones at Crystal Springs Minerals in Aleid(between Kakamas and Augrabies).

Kgalagadi Transfronteir Park needs no introduction!

Some gravel riding exploring perhaps, take the Neilersdrift gravel road (R359) from Kakamas, through Keimoes onto Kanoneiland and stay over at Oranje Rus (under new ownership and forms part of the NC Famous Lodge group). This was normally my birthday celebration ride.

Other gravel option is the gravel road through Vredesvallei, Riemvasmaak onto Kakamas, have not ridden with a bicycle so can`t comment.

Eendag as ek groot is(kinders uit die huis) gaan ek julle weer join.

BAIE DANKIE

We love staying in the Augrabies park.

Book in, switch OFF the car and relax for a couple of days.

We choose a chalet closer to the restaurant, but off the road .... perfect location for us. Short walking distance to the event tent .... but far enough that the "laat kuier" does not impede our sleep.

@DJuice do youtself a favour .... book at Dundi for your next work trip ... potentially a bit higher price .... but WOW !!!   Steenkamps booked us their on a few trips, though we mostly lodged on Southern Farm.

being able to cycle into a truly wild private reserve ....most sections the dear tracks were the only "route" until it popped out near another farm road ...

@ChrisFit`s been awhile since I last visited Dundi, it was in the days of my bikes being worth more than my car and having to impress the ladies.

Restaurant Klein JAN - Tswalu Kalahari | Private Game Reserve

Tutwa deserves a special mention ...

Dedicated landing strip for YOUR GROUP .... the entire lodge for ONE GROUP at a time.  The fee includes everything !!!  Game drives, sunrise and/sunset.  Orange river on canoes.  Hiking ....

Ironically, with 9 recorded leopards they cant promote cycling.  No, you wont see the leopards, just the tracking cameras that counts them.

The Northern Cape you see when driving from Upington to Springbok .... SO MUCH MORE to this area

When you are lucky enough to have projects on the Northern Cape farms and the opportunity is there to go solo into widest landscape .... needed the light as I headed out some time before sunrise ....

and then the day breaks .... and you have to rush back to start working .... (not that you want to be caught outside in the summer sun)

YES, I have lost my heart in that landscape ....
