_Daemon_ Posted December 7, 2006 Share The "fatty goes climbing" thread got me thinking. What would be the ultimate climbing bike, forget the decent on the other side, forget everything, just 100% climbing what frame/setup would be the ultimate? Somehting like a Cervelo R3 with say Zipp 202 tubies?
TitusTi Posted December 7, 2006 Share Depends on the gradient, but I reckon wheels would have to be the OberMayer's or the Ventoux's.
101% Posted December 7, 2006 Share Trek ssLx ( for the stiffness) with Bontrager XXX lite OCLV 55 carbon wheels 970g a pair . Boron XXX lite bars 160g , But I think the bikes rigidity plays a bigger factor than trying to get the weight to low........Unless you one of those Columbian climbers that weigh 50kg's. _Daemon_ Posted December 7, 2006 Share All round climbing etc.... But let's say something like Alpe du Huez.
TitusTi Posted December 7, 2006 Share Depends on your style and the gradient, the steeper it is the more you'll stand?

Chrispy Posted December 7, 2006 Share Francois du Toit put a Pinarello Paris together for the DC. Complete bike weight was 6.4kg. Now that sounds attractive.
Mudsimus Posted December 7, 2006 Share Well if weight determines a good climbing bike the Scott addict wins.5.9kgs incl pedals and bottle cage.
Man with no name Posted December 7, 2006 Share The System Six that Crux built up for Jaco weighed @ 6.84 with 404's. with 202's it came in at about 6.5like This oke reckons his bike comes in at 7.8 lbs (like 3.4 kgs?) http://www.light-bikes.com/bikegallery/BikeListing.asp?id=

splat Posted December 7, 2006 Share Didn't Iban Mayo have a special bike built for the Mont Ventoux time trial in the 2004 Dauphin? Lib?r?? Short wheel base and stupid light frame etc. Obvisouly it still had to be 6.8kg. http://www.cyclingnews.com/teamtech04.php?id=tech/2004/probikes/euskaltel_orbea Lance stripped his special edition Trek down as well to include down tube shifters! http://www.cyclingnews.com/teamtech04.php?id=tech/2004/probikes/madone_ssl_armstrong That was a while ago. Things have moved on a bit...
Gumpole Posted December 7, 2006 Share if it is REALLY steep and short (say 3kms at 10%)then you just get your regular lighweight bike and ditch saddle, seatpost, waterbottle cages, bottles, saddlebag, front derailleur (sp), big blade, brake calipers etc etc.I'm sure I could get my bike to just over 6kg . Dr. Seuss Posted December 7, 2006 Share you cant go less than 6.8kg so get the stiffest bike you can (R3-SL!!!!) & make sure that you save the weight in the rotational parts - wheels, crankset, pedals, chain without sacrificing any stiffness - particularly in the wheels. lowracer Posted December 7, 2006 Share most efficient and stiff might be a prone bicycle, but I wont take it out on the road (taxi territory) the motion will compare more to when you are climbing stairs, than riding a bike. http://www.encycleopedia.com/index.cfm?pid=23&edID=216 http://www.encycleopedia.com/assets/enc/2001/Speed%20and%20Distance/prone/lgPhoto1.jpg
