Why does Lance ride a 58cm size frame?

The major thing is the effective top tube length' date=' which is 56-57cm on most 58cm frames.

If that is the case what is the 58cm based on ?

That's odd. Why didn't he just tell Trek to make a 56 with an extra length top tube?

might i say hectic traditionalist??? smiley4.gif

I still say its weird that he didn't flex his muscle at Trek.

apparently he has a longer upper body and is more comfy on his 58cm rather than a 56 or even a 54 as his legs suggest he should ride

Cool' date=' personal preference vs. what the book says.
[/quote'] Depends on what book you read!  Upper body length and arm length is much more critical than inseam measurement (Sheldon Brown has a good bit on it in his website).  I am sure we discussed this whole sizing issue late last year...

It's the seat tube. Became tricky after Giant introduced the sloping top tube.

I reckon your frame is too small: you have too many spacers.

I reckon the two most important things to look for are effective top tube length and head tube length. You don't want your bars too high, or have too many spacers, and you don't want to match your bike to a ridiculous stem.

I rode a 58cm Merida scultura after being professionally fitted and that bike almost broke my back. Had to resort to fitting a 80mm stem to compensate.

I am 1.89cm and have a long inseam and a short torso.

I now ride a 56cm cervelo RS with a taller headtube and a 120mm stem. The bike fits me well ,but often wonder if a 58cm would have been a better fit as I still use 3cm of spacers under the handle bars.

lancearmstrong @stielster It is a 58. Perhaps the sloping top tube is throwing you off. My first race on a sloping top tube.. 5 minutes ago from web in reply to stielster

he's a twitterholic! wonder if he's going to have a bar mounted blackberry during races?

ride the smallest frame you can get away with and dont use any spacers -- it will hurt your back at first (and you might need a bit of physio),  but you will eventually get used it...

is strange however that LA will ride a 58 seeing that he is rather short,  but then again he wears those long Bjorn Borg socks and really long bibs LOL
