I started a training program 3 months ago and was very unfit at that stage. Wouldn't the difference then be more significant for someone like me?

I rather think your Resting Heart Rate would come down more radically as fitness increases.  I have been using the same max HR for a couple of years now.  However I have changed it know.  Lately I seem to be able to push my HR up bit higher than normal and I am fairly rested.

I am battling to push my hr up as high as I used to. Tried riding up a hill at between 85-90% this weekend and felt like I could barely breathe. In the past I used to do a whole race at that average. My resting hr has come down a bit. Will adjust my max down slightly, thanks.

Go ride a race with your heart rate monitor in your back pocket and go like hell where you can, then download it and you will get your MAX. When people see there HR monitor and see themselves go into the red zone they chill out.

Heres one for you guys. I was fairly unfit towards the end of last year but I did about km 500 offroad during the holidays wit barely ever taking more than n day between rides, sometimes doing 70km and 60 km back to back, while running 5km every alternate day.. just cause I was in Knysna and I was loving it...

So the 5th of jan I went on a roadtrip and got back 11th (sunday). So I had a good rest.

Monday I went for the same ride I do every second time in Capetown but found I was way stronger than before and my Legs were'nt even burning going up the blockhouse climb I was also very comfortable and could talk to my mates the whole way. At a point I wanted to see how far this could go so I let loose up the last steep part up to the tarr road where I could maintain this pace for much longer.

When I got home I found that I spent a whole 15 minutes In a 1:30 ride in the red ( 90%) while normally I would spend a couple of seconds there.

Is this also ones Lactic acid threashhold that was pushed up? I did not find my Max lower eiter.

That 210 you talking about is that the amount of spares you have to buy after starting your KTM?

I wouldn't adjust it downwards, unless you had it tested years ago. Its only 'supposed' to come down as you get older, not fitter.

Perhaps you were tired, or possibly overtrained?

Nope, this will be a first. Does he at least know what he's talking about?

How often should you reassess your max hr?

After an initial max hr test perhaps once every few years...

IMO about once a month. EDITED FOR CLARITY - Sorry Mandibles I somehow misunderstood max hr for LT....

Not only for the purpose of setting your training levels but also to assess your state of fitness (improvement or lack thereof). This would be best done after a "easy week" so that your body is rested for a 100% effort

This can be done by means of a 100% timed hill climb over +/- 5km or a 20 min flat TT using the exact same course every time so you can compare previous results, also compare other factors which can affect the results i.e. temprature, wind...
