Come to think of it Willehond' date=' we don't use the term "African" in english in that context either, probably for the same reason. Over the years the word has come to refer to a specific type of person from Africa, and does not include all people from Africa. Think about the people from Egypt - I doubt many people associate them with the word "African".

Waht about Euro-African. It's like Afro American but just with brains.

When I say I speak Afrikaans to Dutch people they look at me like I'm stupid.  See' date=' Afrikaans means 'African' in Dutch and there is no word for the (dying?) language of Afrikaans.  I have to say I speak 'Zuid-Afrikaans', which is another incorrect name, but it gets me by...

Which begs the question; why does Afrikaans not have a word for African? (one which actually gets used!!!).  Is it because all the words for African have been banned?

There is no word for it cause that means the afrikaaners have to put down their Kurt Darren CD's and think outside the box, pull the comb out the top of their socks when they pull them up and figure out a new word in the dying language. This means that alot of people in their kakies will hurt themselves

The injury ratio is to great as their arent alot of them left and the chances are like 43:1.

Not good at any bookie Im afraid.....

Mense julle is die grootste klomp suckers as julle vir Colonel se posts val.  Hy voel 'n veer of afrikaans uitsterf of nie. Hy gee ook nie regtig om nie en ek is seker dit is nie sy mening nie.

AL rede hoekom hy dit post is uit die reaksie wat hy kry. Hy wil nie 'n stelling maak nie' date=' dit is net entertaining om te sien hoe mense ELKE LIEWE slag na sy stelling bos gaan.

I had the same experience in Suriname, When I explained that my "gebrookte Nederlands" was actually Afrikaans the reply was " Oh is that the language of Africa?"  This from the Maroons (descendants of West African slaves)    Trying to explain about the vast number of African languages just resulted in blank looks.

Vir die mense wat dink dat afrikaan 'n onbekende woord is, en daarme hulle eie onkunde asook eie gebrekkige respek vir andere rassegroeperinge uitwys, hier is die Google soekresultate vir afrikaan, wat aandui dat die woord glad nie so onbekend is nie. 652,000 trefslae!!!!

Web

Resultaat 1 tot 10 van omtrent 652,000 vir +afrikaan. (0.31 sekondes)

You can?t chose your name but you can surely choose your login name - I choose my name as a result of having it as a company login. Company policy was to use the first 5 letters of your surname and the first two letters of your name.

Since then I have found it to be very convienent on the net since it is uncommon.

Maybe it's the afrikaans word for shpongle....... Confused

All I know it that it's the longest word I've heard of in daai taal. Until I'm educated otherwise that is Wink
