thank you for this topic, this came to may attention again in a big way during this weekends ride in paarl.

I started in F group and the amount of ppl that do this is staggering especially in the back groups. it is so dangerous and annoying, why do it???

It helps nothing!

Please stop it!

I agree this never use to happen in the 90's, just reach down, grab your bottle, drink and put it back, the longer your hands are off the handlebars the more dangerous it is so rather just grab, drink and put hands back on bars fast.

LOL@ The Crow.
The butt slapping: It's just silly. It's like that rider wants to say: "Oh, look at my nice, tight buttocks - o yes and I'm passing someone..."

We have Andrew and SuperCycling to blame for this one - I remember an episode many years ago when Arnie still had his original hair' date=' and Owen hadn't yet doped where they suggested this rather odd behaviour.

Seems more prevalent the further back you go in the seeding...

it was prevelant amongst the newly established Cyclelab members a few years ago. a mate of mine used to do a good copycat impression of them. it seems to have died out but you still get the odd clown.

Had a guy in front of me in B group 94.7 and A group Fast One that did this bottle-at-arms length thing.  Was wondering what it was all about.  Made sure to get ahead of him before he did it again!

I must confess to the bum slapping - I learnt it from a guy who took me on my first road ride but I promise to stop it now.

If I take a drink I hang the bottle out just wider than the bike, 45 degree angle downwards maybe, for a second or two. It just makes the person aware that there is a possibility of a bottle falling.

I wish other riders had that consideration a few Argus's back when I had water bottles rolling past my front wheel going down hospital bend.

any other professional nuances beginner bunch riders need to know about ?

so just point ? but dont slap the bum --- only time i have shaken the bottle is to get the damn stuff at the bottom of the bottle to dissolve as it always settles,

what other signals do we need to learn ?

Dont, just drink and replace the bottle. No one cares that you want a bit of refreshment, we normally assume that since you take the bottle out of your cage and put it to your mouth you are having a drink.

In 8 years of riding I have NEVER dropped a bottle, dont do that either. waving your bottle doesnt make it any more secure does it.

Would it have helped?  To know where it was dropped?  In my experience the bottle stays nowhere close to the place it was dropped.  It usually rolls a few meters away, and then causes havoc.  Especially if it was frozen overnight.

By far the largest cause (as in: 90%) of water bottles on the road comes from bottles jumping out of (possible bad) bottle cages when you hit a bump or pothole.

I do the bum-slapping thing if other people are doing it because possibly they would ignore a pointed finger (because they expect a different gesture)  I've got to take my hand of my handlebar anyway.  In other words: when in Rome, do like the Romans do.

I hope and pray this happened on the bike and only as part of cycling... Dead

Would love to see the guy drinking from his bottle 10 minutes into the race DOWN Hospital Bend. I suspect the bottles jump out of dodgy carbon bottle cages...

Must be either a new thing or a Cape Town thing. I've never seen this ridiculous activity in a road race ? or even heard about it ? but then I haven't done a road race for more than a year...

What next, a cautionary shout to the pack to indicate a gear shift is about to occur?

PS. Very well said Ian Rodger!
