in all honesty - I don't have much time for bikers as they do just as they please on the roads... Thumbs%20Down

I'm also not referring to the above incident but actual people riding with thinkbike jackets!!! FK

I agree paulvs' date=' some of us bikers are dodgy.  Remember, TB bibs can be bought everywhere (flippit, even on street corners!!).  Another thing, TB is a campaign, not a policing setup.  TB advocates safe riding to bikers.  If they ignore it, how do you force them to listen?  Your statement can be turned around as "I don't have much time for cyclists as they always skip traffic lights".  Same thing, is it not?  Easy way to sort out the TB guys that peeve you off is to get the reg no and PM me or Slowpoke, we can find out who it is.  Last question, aren't you maybe a bit peeved that we don't have to sit in traffic??? Wink

ok' date=' i've asked ewep to keep you lot informed - he's organising a petition etc so he's going to be more "on top of things" than me.[/quote']

So things will be squashed flat will they?

Me, FAT?  NEVER!!!!  Just a bit "over inflated".  I'm not called Pieman for nothing!!

My tuppence:

Taxis are an unfortunate necessity. 90 (95?) percent of the

population rely on them for transport.

The problem is that they are a hugely influential mafia. They

are thugs and police are involved. The government is also

scared of them as they don't have the balls to face up to the

taxi associations. It's also a lot more complex as they do

assassinate people on a regular basis (look at KZN...)' date=' hold

"protests" (look at CT...), and so on... .So we have a government

that has neither the courage nor the will to tackle them...

The average commuter cannot also take them on. If they cause any

"trouble", there's 20 taxi operators and their muscle beating the

@#$% out of them... I have found taxi drivers are bullies. They

think they can treat you like $%^# and threaten you until they see

you pulling out a Sect 56. Then they're your best buddies...

As for the traffic police, taxis are one facet of the problem. Most

Metro police are not interested in monitoring moving violations.

They prefer to book on and sit under a tree with a camera or

else spend the time with 20 of their colleagues at the local

McDonalds. It is an indictment of the political appointment of people

not interested in the job (e.g. Robert McBride) and has led to

a severe degradation of the work ethic. Again, this is a lot more

complex.

So the issue is a lot more complex than just taxis and police. It's

the entire political situation that has forced this upon us. We have

a government that doesn't give a damn about doing a decent job,

so why should the government employees? They take their cue from

their gravy train bosses (look at the VIP blue light road hogs).

[/quote']

IMHO an excellent summary of the problem, now, what to do to resolve it?

If we with hold taxes we will be arrested and prosecuted with a speed and efficiency that will make your head spin.

OK, update on the petition, the TB committee is going to do it the right way.  We might all be "up in arms", but behind this there is a broken family.  So please bear with them.  They want to do it the right way!

In all honesty I don't have ANY time for people like you who make general statement like this. The thread is not about what you like' date=' or dislike, but about ideas on how to help better the situation with taxis.

But are we not making general statements about Taxi's?

I agree, the only way to do this is the right way.  Although the alternative seems very, very appealing.

Actually no. I have yet to find the taxi that stop at a stop street, use indicators, use designated loading zones etc.

Not if all you Whiteys  taxpayers stood together, which is unlikely to happen once you get past the petition signing stage.

Shaun, I changed the title so that the one law abiding taxi driver out there (somewhere) doesn't feel unfairly victumised.

But, in my daily experience, I come across more people in their 4 x 4's and fancy mercs, bm's & audi's that break the law all the time and are supposed to be 'educated'.

I am not condoning this incident and 'some' hooligan taxi drivers behaviour, but as stated on other threads, we all drive recklessly and flaunt the laws!! Just my HO.

So VOTE. We have an election coming up. Speak to your party, get some kind of commitment to bring up the issue for public debate, whatever. Voting is our biggest weapon. Watch a ruling party start coming to the party (sorry, could not resist) when its majority is being eroded.

Not trying to be funny, but I do, religiously and not for this corrupt bunch of clowns who have steadily dragged this country back into the dark ages in a fairly short period of time.

My problem with the taxis is that they advertise lawlessness... Usually when the traffic is standing still and the taxis start using the emergency lane as their own personal autobahn private cars always join them.

The same thing happened with the whole Carl Niehaus story... as long as you don't get caught you can break the law.

jmaccelari - so you're blaming it on apartheid then? Wink

Well, it kind of was the cunning plan of the previous government to cause unrest by deregulating the industry literally overnight in 1987. We should blame it on Groot Krokodil.

I saw an article today in the Cape Times where an old woman was taking President Mothlante to task about how JZ had promised her a house in 19voetsek and she was still living in a shack. Guess what? She's still voting ANC. And as long as 2/3 of the population still believe the k@k that politicians spew forth, we're stuffed.

That said, every vote counts. Nobody really cares who for, as long as it's not the status quo.

you must see what a frozen water bottle does to a taxi's lights and mirrors. I just suggest you pedal like there is no tomorrow afterwards.
