Wow, that is pretty profound, I never thought that it would have gone much further that the discussions on the hub. Will be intesting to follow how this pans out. I wonder if the purported price fixing actualy took place following the heat on the hub or if simply planning to fix prices is enough to get charged / fined etc...

If you ask me, the Competition Commission has rushed into issuing a press release with only a very superficial investigation.

Anyway it's great stuff that they're investigating and nice of them to give the Hub a plug.

As for the alleged price fixing, if it's for real, the retailers are fools. There is more than enough scope for the likes of CWC, CRC, Kiwi, etc to bypass any cartels.

Oh my

Went throught legal training last week re anti-competitive behaviour. Very complex indeed, one need to have a lot of ducks in a perfect row.

Penalties aren't that stiff (10% of annual turnover), but legal fees will bump it up quite a bit.  And the bad publicity!!

Wait for the dawn raid!!!

First time I saw this thread and now this press release...  All I say is F#$% them, I won't support them EVER. Seen some of the crazy prices myself when comparing them to a smaller shop...  and they should have the better economies of scale...

the saying should be changed - GREED is the mother of all F%$@ ups!!DeadDead

YAWN. 'Possible'. 'Alleged'. Did they all put up their prices on 1 October 2008?

This investigation will take ages to be completed. Look how long it's taken to get it started! And even then will probably just fizzle out into a soft warning by which time bike and parts prices will have been increased again and again because of the weak Rand and global economic crisis.

Did anyone see the Bicycling buyers guide last montha nd notice that bicycles went up by roughly the same % as mentioned above Shocked

I am sure trhis has to do with the $,Pound,Rand,Euro,DM, Yen, $Zim, Kr, Lira, Escudo, Meticash, etc etc exchange rate as well as the Us Elections, the war in IraQ, Afghanistan, Pakhistan, Sierra Leone.. not to mention the inf;luence of BushSnr, Bush jnr, Castro, Mugabe, Obama, Osama, Sadam, Zuma, Mbeki, Blair, Thatcher, Brown, Puerto and Lance !!!

Other influences are also the oil price, cod liver oil price, olive oil price, vegatable oil price, avocado oil price and coconut oil prices.

Continental tires increased in price due to the high price of chilli's used in their black chilli compound as well.

There are other factors but DEFINATELY not price fixing .....Wink
