For those of you who seem envious of McLean et al success, think about this:

Success is just a matter of luck. Ask any UNsuccessful man.

That's a previous post. I don't particularly know either of the gentlemen concerned' date=' but lets face it, they did get off their bums and do seriously impressive things for our sport. If they were naughty, they will have to make amends, but let's not stand around celebrating their downfall. [/quote']

Clap well said Clap

Unfortunately "carteling" is not unique to cycling, the world is riddled with it... and before someone lectures about being ripped off, just remember all the good things these guys have done.

In the end, let's just hope it's good for the sport in some way...

In a free market economy, we rely on a large number of retailers competing.  So hoping that these retailers get shut down is neither here nor there, because even if they're operating, there's no competition if they're fixing prices.

I say, fine them, watch the industry closely, and step in if price increases are unjustified.  The problem is that the damage has been done to their reputations.   I have never supported Cycle Lab, because I can see their prices are bull.  But for the people who have supported them, and gotten ripped off, they won't go back if they are capable of logical thought Wink It'll probably take some time and a couple of changes in management, along with some good marketing, to win peoples' trust back.

Where's there's smoke, there's a fire.  And although the 'innocent until proven guilty' mindset is fine in theory, real life rarely works like that.  You just have compare prices and make up your own mind about it, I sure have.

So let them investigate, if people get fined, fine.  If they go to jail, that's life, and more importantly, that's justice and the law.  Emotions and feelings about the people involved have no place in the argument.

Let's just hope we see some price cuts and that the cycling image isn't tarnished as a whole.

Guys,we get ripped off with everything in SA.How many people on the Hub have bought a new bike(not insurace claim) in Sa in the last 12 months?or even spares over R2k if you can get it cheaper overseas.

If i can get a better price over the net then i will buy from there.

If these shops/wholesalers are pushing the prices up then they are going to close themselves down.

At the end of the day they will pay a fine if found guilty and they will carry on trading.

Intern you've made some good points

If guys don't like Cyclelab. Go somewhere else. They can charge what they want it is THEIR STORE. So stop crying over 20% higher this and 2.5% discount this. You don't like it' date=' then go somewhere else.

As for price fixing, just leave it to the justice system to take it's course

What? They are the reason for all the price increaces in all cycle shops - they and their friends got a monopoly and then lift the RRP of bikes. Other shops cant sell for much less.

No one is crying - just not cool to be assraped and then made to believe that you can get a discount, and so keep you in their claws

I'm sure all of you that are so quick to criticise go to work every day purely out of the goodness of your heart.....

Get real!!

This place can be truly pathetic some days....

Far too often people take so much glee in other peoples problems... I can list a number of examples... think about it... how would you feel if you were on the receiving end???  Seriously.... do you guys have the emotional intelligence of a maggot or what???

Agree.

Okay I don't like this one bit but one thing I don't understand. They are only raising the RRP, not the actual wholesale price. So it's still up to the shop to decide if they are selling at the inflated RRP or are willing to let it go for wholesale +10%. I still don't know why the distributor need to recommend at what price stuff needs to be sold. If I can sell 100 bikes at 10% profit and the next guy sell 50 bikes at 20% profit, we're still making the same amount of money, it's just that I will get more new business and sell more when people realise I sell cheaper.
