This list made me think . The worst light on this list would be better value than the lights you buy at cycling shops. Heavy and up to 6000 rand for output no higher than 2000lux max. Conclusion lights bought at cycling shops = ripp off

That is a list of flash lights (torches).

Yes, you can use some of these on a bike with a bracket intended to mount a flash light. I have suggested exactly this before as a budget option.

You need to be more specific as to which lights you consider to be a rip-off though.

As with any product there are rip-offs, but there are some very nice bike specific lights on the market with output exceeding that of many of the flash lights on the list.

Experience in building DIY bike lights has taught me that mounting the light on the bike is one of the most difficult bits to get right. You want a stable mounting which still allows the light to be easily adjusted, attached and removed.

Separating the light head and battery helps by removing a lot of the weight from the bit you need to stabilise.

There is definitely more R&D and manufacturing costs for a decent bike light compared to a standard flash light.

Nice light is the Sigma Karma - think they sell for 2200 - friend got one for 1500 though....

Depends on what you wana do. I only do night riding on normal dirt roads or jeeptracks, no tecnical stuff - and I use a Pedzel tikka XP headlight and a smaller Petzel tikka plus on my handlebar. enough light to do the transbaviaans and you ever have problems with batteries!! great cheap option.

For tecnical stuff - uummmm - try riding during day hoursLOL

The Karma rocks... hadn't used mine in nearly a year, pushed the on button and still had juice left for three rides!

not sure. I have offered to be standby rider for the team Cobus is riding in and they are all using iBlaast II. It will be a very illuminating experience for others :)

So here's the R3000 question: If I have - let's say R3000 - what is the best light I can get for the money?  I ride with a group twice a week at night for maybe 2 hours, but may be interested in doing the TranBaviaans at some point.
